United Friends of the Children empowers current and former foster youth on their journey to self-sufficiency through service-enriched education and housing programs, advocacy, and consistent relationships with a community of people who care.
United Friends has been an integral part of the Los Angeles foster care community since our founding by Nancy M. Daly in 1979. Our early advocacy efforts helped establish the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services and pass the Foster Care Independence Act. Innovations in direct services span from co-founding the first transitional housing program in the nation for former foster youth to the creation of an 11-year education support continuum that follows foster youth from the seventh grade through the completion of a bachelor’s degree.
Starting as early as the 7th grade and following students through college graduation, The Scholars Program forges trusting relationships with youth as they navigate some of life's most pivotal moments. Reporting to the Director of Education, the Manager leads a team of College Counselors and all aspects of programming to ensure that our 7th - 10th grade scholars receive the best possible guidance and support in their journey to and through college. The individual in this position will also support youth directly as needed. Utilizing a Tuesday-Saturday work schedule, the Manager will coach and support College Counselors in the day-to-day management of their caseloads. They will also assist with the design and implementation of key programmatic components including, Saturday youth workshops, special events and program evaluation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management and Coaching
● Support and develop College Counselors in their implementation of United Friends’ service model.
● Provide case management support for and oversight of up to five College Counselors and an Assistant Manager.
● Review Counselor notes in United Friends’ database, monitor execution of case plans and assess frequency and quality of case management.
● Continually expand and update professional and technical knowledge within the education, foster care, management, and case management fields.
● Assist with hiring, training, and developing College Counselors.
● Support the strategic expansion of The Scholars Program to the Antelope Valley.
● Plan, execute, and participate in Saturday workshops and events.
● Participate in the development of workshop curriculum.
● Represent United Friends’ programs and mission in the broader community.
● Track scholars’ progress towards and achievement of Scholars Program milestones and work with Education Team to develop interventions as needed.
● Analyze departmental outcomes and work with Education Team to enhance program model.
● Support College Counselors’ data entry process in order to ensure timeliness and data integrity.
● Work with Director to develop, improve and implement evaluation tools that assess the program impact and needs.
Budget Planning and Management
● Identify the spending trends of the program and analyze in conjunction with the projections for the program’s approved budget.
● Review all requested purchase orders and monthly reimbursement requests to ensure that planned spending is aligned with approved budget.

● BA degree in a related field
● 2+ years of direct management experience
● 1+ years of case management experience
● Establishes and cultivates respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
● Demonstrated experience supporting youth (in middle school/high school) in their pursuit of higher education
● Manages complex projects and balances multiple competing priorities with strong attention to detail
● Holds self and others accountable to high expectations, works well both independently and collaboratively, and relates tasks to organizational values and vision
● Conveys thoughts and ideas clearly, listens well, communicates in a solution-oriented manner and incorporates others’ views into work.
● An understanding of and sensitivity to issues concerning current and former foster youth
● Master’s Degree in a related field
● Experience working with the counseling method of Motivational Interviewing

Level of Language Proficiency
