About the Position
The Biosafety Officer Fellows will spend a year embedded within a community biology laboratory to help develop safety standards and protocols for the growing number of labs working outside of traditional lab settings. This is an opportunity for Master’s, PhD level biosafety officers or those with 4+ years experience.
Over the last decade, a growing number of groups, known as the Do-It- Yourself Biology, Biohacker, or Community Biology movement, have been performing biotechnology research outside of academic and industrial laboratories. These groups—including community labs, home labs, and organized groups—have grown rapidly from one group 10 years ago to roughly 125 around the globe today.
Based on information shared between community members, in news articles, at conferences, and in personal visits, it is clear that community lab work has become increasingly sophisticated. The culture of informality, open access, and broad experimentation make these great places for community exploration and innovation; yet they face unique biosafety/security circumstances.
Fellows have a fantastic opportunity to meet and support a global community of biotechnology enthusiasts and develop expertise in a growing research and education sector. The Fellowship includes travel to labs in the U.S. The Fellowship is organized as follows: Fellows will spend the first half of the year discovering, developing, and participating in lab programming. Over the second half, they will collaborate with program staff to develop safety and security practices for working in and operating community labs. This is a unique chance to creatively design new biosafety protocols while simultaneously supporting citizen science and education.

- Help develop and manage lab operations at the community lab facility—including ordering and inventorying materials, and developing improved and more efficient management systems—to ensure lab safety and security
- Develop safety education and training for community members
- Review and develop lab chemical and biological safety procedures
- Along with the other fellows develop an online safety handbook that is accessible and flexible for the diversity of lab settings within the community biology movement
- Visit with regional community labs to evaluate safety protocols and offer improvements
- Participate in onsite work sessions with other fellows, staff and safety advisors to plan and develop the safety handbook.
- Ability to think out of the box
- Master’s or Doctor of Philosophy degree in biology, microbiology, public health field or those with 4+ years experience in related areas and/or equivalent experience/training
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of bio-safety and bio-security principles, policies, and procedures; knowledge and experience with local, state, and federal regulations governing health and safety
- Knowledgeable in research laboratory operations and procedures
- Strong skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
- Skill in interacting diplomatically with persons of various educational, social and cultural backgrounds in a demanding, dynamic and stressful environment
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage and prioritize multiple tasks, and to work with shifting priorities and schedules
- Knowledgeable in recognition, evaluation, and control of biologically or chemically hazardous materials, including handling, identification, properties, storage and disposal
- Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
- Ability to write and develop operating procedures and perform technical reviews of research proposals
- Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time constraints
- Professional certification in Registered Biological Safety Professional or Certified Biological Safety Professional
- Teaching experience
- Interest in science outreach and education

BUGSS is a non-profit public laboratory offering classes, seminars, and lab access so that anyone can safely and affordably investigate the living world. We are a community of amateurs, professionals, citizen scientists, activists, and artists exploring biotechnology through scientific and artistic investigations.
