New American Economy (NAE) is seeking a State and Local Policy Associate to assist in project management, writing, research, and communications. The State and Local Policy Associate will work on multiple projects, primarily with NAE’s State and Local Initiatives team, but also with the Research, Arts and Culture, and Communications teams, as well as the Executive and Managing Directors. The ideal candidate is able to think outside the box and is a detail-oriented and effective multi-tasker, a self-starter, a strong writer, and comfortable working in a fast-paced policy environment. This position is full-time and preference is for New York City based candidates (currently remote).

New American Economy is a bipartisan research and advocacy organization fighting for smart federal, state, and local immigration policies that help grow our economy and create jobs for all Americans. We make the economic case for immigration in four ways: 1) We use powerful research to demonstrate how immigration impacts our economy; 2) we organize champions at the grassroots and influencer levels to build support for immigration; 3) we partner with state and local leaders to advocate for policies that recognize the value immigrants add locally; and 4) we show immigrant contributions to American culture through film, food, art, sports, comedy, and more. Learn more about NAE here.

NAE’s State and Local Initiatives works with a network of more than 100 local communities and  more than 35 states to advocate for and support immigrant integration initiatives and policies. The Policy Associate’s portfolio will cover a range of projects, including two of NAE’s flagship programs: the Gateways for Growth Challenge, a competitive opportunity for local governments, chambers of commerce, and non-profit organizations to receive support to improve immigrant inclusion; and the Global Talent Chamber Network, which brings together more than 40 chambers of commerce who see immigrant integration as an economic growth strategy. Learn more about what the State and Local Initiatives team does, and where, here.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating NAE’s Gateways for Growth Challenge, including: soliciting and reviewing applications, liaising with selected communities on research, technical assistance and matching grant awards, and coordinating with external collaborating partners.
  • Serving as the departmental liaison with the Research, Creative, and Communication teams.
  • Writing, fact-checking, copy-editing, and coordinating the production of research briefs and narrative reports across departments.
  • Fostering effective working relationships with external partners (e.g.: municipal partners, chambers of commerce, Gateways for Growth awardees, and others), collaborating on research projects and immigrant integration initiatives.
  • Assisting in local and state-level policy and legislative tracking and analysis; proactively identifying opportunities to support partner legislative priorities; maintaining all NAE resources on best practices from the field
  • Aiding the State and Local team in managing NAE’s Global Talent Chamber Network and state business coalitions in Texas, Colorado and Ohio as needed.
  • Assisting the Director and Associate Director of State and Local Initiatives with all institutional outreach efforts, programming, quarterly newsletters, and presentations.
  • Administrative tasks as necessary.
  • Occasional travel (roughly once a quarter, dependent on health and safety requirements) to represent NAE at conferences and events.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and an interest in U.S. politics/policy and/or U.S. immigration policy.
  • Strong multi-tasking ability, with desire to work on a variety of projects at once, from logistics and operations to research, policy analysis, and communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and management (preferred).

Bonus points if you have:

  • Past experience with research using microdata such as the American Community Survey or the Current Population Survey.
  • Experience with coding software (STATA, R, etc.), Adobe Creative Suite programs (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.), Wordpress CMS, and/or email HTML coding.
