DOROT, which means “generations” in Hebrew, provides a dynamic partnership of seniors, volunteers, and professionals dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults. DOROT’s mission is to alleviate social isolation among the elderly and to help them live independently as valued members of the community. Our wide array of programs – conducted on-site, in the home and in the community – are designed to help seniors remain engaged, connected, and knowledgeable about the resources they need. Since DOROT’s inception in 1976 we have been a leader in creating innovative programs for older people to fulfill our mission of alleviating social isolation. DOROT’s clients range in age from 60 to over 100 with an average age of 83, vary in physical mobility and economic status, and come from diverse backgrounds. We bring generations together in mutually beneficial partnerships, engaging over 7,000 volunteers of all ages each year. DOROT offers programs in our catchment area (the Upper West Side from 59th to 125th Streets, East Side from 14th to 96th Streets and Westchester County) and also serves seniors throughout New York and more broadly through our teleconference and online programming.

DOROT recognizes the potential for technology to facilitate the vital connections that older people need to maintain social ties and participate in activities—especially when health and mobility make it challenging to leave home. The Director of DOROT’s Connect through Tech Programs for Seniors, a newly created position, will provide programmatic oversight, drive results, and create new opportunities for seniors to connect to and engage with peers, younger generations, and their communities. The Director will lead DOROT’s nationally recognized University Without Walls (UWW) teleconferencing and online programs and embark on new initiatives that enable seniors to forge social connections and access resources. Reporting to the Senior Program Officer for Community-Based Programs and External Affairs, the Director will work with the senior management team, fellow Directors, and other colleagues to build and strengthen current programs and to conceive and initiate new opportunities.


About DOROT’s University Without Walls (UWW) Programs - DOROT’s UWW program, started nearly 30 years ago, uses telephone and online conferencing to offer older adults a range of learning opportunities, support groups, and discussions —all in their own homes. This program serves seniors who may not be able to participate in on-site programs due to mobility limitations, transportation challenges, and/or health-related issues. Participating seniors benefit from intellectual stimulation, information on a broad range of relevant topics, lively and interactive discussions, and peer-to-peer support.

DOROT’s Russian University Without Walls program offers telephone courses to one of New York’s largest elderly immigrant groups.

About our New Technology Initiatives - DOROT’s new five-year strategic plan includes the development of a program to provide trained volunteers to help seniors, in their own homes, with basic technology skills (e.g. utilizing email and social media, communicating with family through video conferencing and photo sharing apps, etc.) and on-site events using corporate and professional volunteers to support seniors’ use of handheld devices. The new Director will also spearhead our efforts to assess client needs, identify exciting opportunities, and bring new ideas to fruition.

Overall Responsibilities 

·       Serve as a thought leader and innovator for DOROT, driving and guiding existing and new technology-based programs.

  • Develop strategies and establish technology program/service goals to increase senior connections through greater participation, deeper engagement, and client-centered administrative systems.
  • Lead, supervise, and inspire a staff team of three to six employees including hiring and training new staff, conducting employee evaluations and supporting each in meeting goals and achieving results.

·       Manage program budget and ensure expenditures are in line with projections.

·       Stay abreast of advances in technology and trends in use of computers for older people to facilitate their learning, connecting, and sharing.

·       Develop a work plan for building internal capacity to meet existing programs’ growth goals and for the phased implementation of new initiatives.

·       Cultivate and maintain effective strategic relationships to advance current projects and create new ones.

·       Partner with DOROT’s Director of Impact and Evaluation to develop program logic models, identify impact measures, and design evaluation surveys. 

·       Oversee the implementation of program grants, monitor their deliverables, and work with the Development team on grant proposals and reporting.

·       Collaborate with other DOROT staff to refer clients and coordinate activities.

·       Ensure effective systems are in place for timely program tracking: oversee the collection of participant data and program metrics in DOROT’s client database, review program metrics, prepare internal reports, and utilize data to inform program planning and increase impact. 

·       Present the program at local and national conferences.

·       Assist with “hands on” department and/or program responsibilities when needed.

·       Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities Specific to UWW Programs

  • Define and lead a growth strategy for all UWW programs.
  • Strengthen DOROT’s online platform in anticipation of attracting more tech savvy home-based clients in the future. 
  • Develop and evaluate new courses and curriculum that provide opportunities for older persons to learn, maintain mental acuity, and connect with one another.  
  • Manage administrative processes and call connecting technology to insure that all aspects of the program, including registration of participants, onboarding of facilitators, and connecting participants to their courses is handled with efficiency and outstanding customer service.   

·       Maintain, train, guide, and monitor a cadre of experienced and new volunteer and professional course facilitators. Provide feedback, support, and guidance to maintain standards. 

·       Establish strategic partnerships to increase the use of UWW across the country, testing different types of partners and models. 

·       Oversee the creation and implementation of an outreach strategy to reach a broader audience and enroll new participants. 

·       Coordinate the design, printing, and distribution of course catalogs and marketing materials.

Responsibilities Specific to New Tech Initiatives

·       Craft and pilot new strategies to develop social connections through technology using research on use of technology by older people and successful approaches to alleviating social isolation to inform recommendations.

·       Elevate DOROT’s use of virtual reality to bring meaningful experiences to more homebound clients.

·       Create curriculum, formalize volunteer trainings and ongoing support, and establish operational systems for on-site and in-home technology skill-building programs.

·       Work with the Volunteer Services Department to recruit skilled individuals, corporate partners, and professional groups. 

Skills, Abilities, and Experience

The successful candidate will bring creativity to programming and be a versatile professional who can move easily between and balance a range of responsibilities. S/he is a strong manager with a proven track record in motivating, engaging, and creating a cohesive team that delivers high quality services. Qualifications include:

·       Master’s degree, with a minimum of five years of experience in education or arts programing, social services, nonprofit management, or other related field. 

  • Proven ability to lead a staff team, build individual capacities, and promote excellence.
  • Passion for and demonstrated success in delivering programs and information to groups in creative and engaging formats.

·       Strong aptitude for understanding and integrating technology, videoconferencing, and online learning platforms, and willingness to explore and learn. 

·       Knowledge of program models and trends related to technology and older adults.

·       Competency in and appreciation for data analytics — with the ability to translate information into actionable items.

·       Passion, warmth, and sensitivity for DOROT’s constituents and mission, as well as an understanding of Jewish values and the community.

·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·       Availability to work occasional evening and weekend hours for programs and presentations, and approximately six Sundays a year for package deliveries and other activities.

·       Familiarity with database/information management systems and Microsoft Office programs required.

  • Experience with older people and knowledge of aging issues a plus.

·       Volunteer management experience a plus.
