The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Position Summary

NRDC is seeking a talented and motivated Benefits Coordinator to work with the Human Resources team in our New York office and help manage the growing portfolio of benefit offerings we provide to staff. This role reports to the Benefits Manager and works closely with the Benefits Specialist.


Benefits Administration (60%)

  • Administer data processing and perform regular system audits to safeguard database integrity.
  • Manage benefits materials and develop innovative solutions to promote employee engagement and showcase benefits information for HR colleagues and staff.
  • Audit, review, organize, and catalog benefits materials in various electronic and physical locations.
  • Administer benefits reimbursements, reconcile all invoices related to benefits, and process payments.
  • Identify and map out processes to administer various benefits plans and policies.
  • Develop, analyze, and prepare recurring HR metrics and ad-hoc reports related to benefits programs.
  • Clearly and accurately articulate benefits-related information both verbally and in written form.
  • Ensure that data is accurate and provide metrics on benefits programs and initiatives.
  • Research compliance-related issues and day-to-day activities.
  • Administer leave of absences with staff and HR colleagues, including but not limited to:
  • Educate employees on leave parameters and expectations.
  • Complete all necessary data entry and/or forms.
  • Coordinate leave information with third-party administrators.
  • Understand and interpret leave of absence policies.
  • Communicate with managers, HR colleagues and staff on leave.
  • Coordinate all leave records with the employees, carriers, payroll, and HRIS.
  • Process benefits correspondence, both physical and electronic.

Staff Engagement (25%)

  • Address staff inquiries and resolve open issues in a timely matter.
  • Conduct benefits orientation sessions.

HR Team Support (15%)

  • Collaborate with management and HR colleagues in preparing and delivering benefits materials.
  • Act as liaison with other HR colleagues.
  • Work on special projects as assigned and other duties as needed.


  • BA/BS degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 2-3 years' experience in human resources, preferably in benefits administration; some project management knowledge desirable.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, organize and coordinate multiple tasks, set priorities, follow organizational procedures, and perform quickly and accurately under deadlines.
  • Advanced computer skills in Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Strong business process management skills, reporting and presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze material logically, and share ideas and recommendations clearly.
  • Experience or interest in HR and related work.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and commensurate with skills and experience. The job grade for this role is Human Resources-Builds 2 with a salary ranging from $50,000 to $58,000. Internal equity considerations and the average salary of the peer range will be reviewed before making a final offer.
