Position: Intimate Partner Violence Specialist (In a Medical Setting)             Date: September 2021

Scope of Position:       

Under the supervision of the BDVP STOP IPV Supervisor, the IPV Specialist is primarily responsible for providing individual and group counseling services and advocacy for intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors and their families as part of a hospital-based IPV prevention and response program. The IPV Specialist will be based out of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Karabots, with one day per week spent at the Lutheran Settlement House main office (pending hospital and agency COVID practices regarding work from home). The IPV Specialist also provides training, technical support, and program development within their hospital site as part of the STOP IPV program. 

Functions and Duties:

  • Provides individual counseling, case management, advocacy, accompaniment and referral services to IPV victim/survivors and their families.
  • Provides quality client services and maintains client records accurately in accordance with agency standards.
  • Facilitates or co-facilitates group counseling for IPV survivors and their families.
  • Maintains up-dated information regarding procedures for obtaining and enforcing protection from abuse court orders. Remains current with local, state and federal laws that impact services to domestic violence victims and their families.
  • Maintains updated and accurate referral information for community resources.
  • Advocates with institutions, agencies, and systems on behalf of IPV survivors and their families.
  • Participates in the development and presentation of workshops/trainings on IPV issues to the hospital and larger community.
  • Consults regularly with hospital teams to review cases and coordinate calls and follow-up as appropriate.
  • Provides scheduled hotline coverage and counseling intakes and ongoing counseling clients as needed.
  • Provides support with teen dating violence initiatives.
  • Participates in team/staff meetings, in-service and volunteer trainings, and other LSH/BDVP functions as may be required.
  • Meets regularly with supervisor to review program activity, service issues, and other program matters. This includes a routine review of service documentation and other program information to assure compliance with program standards and agency service goals.
  • Assists with evaluation of the BDVP programs and services including facilitating client and training surveys, and participates in the development of new program concepts.
  • Participates in the development of printed materials, public service announcements, and public relations on IPV.
  • Serves as “task supervisor” to STOP IPV intern as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

 Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 2 years experience in providing counseling services is preferred. One year of relevant supervised quality experience may be substituted for each year of education. The individual is expected to demonstrate understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence, knowledge of community resources, and sensitivity to the needs of domestic violence victims and their families. Applicant should have previous training experience. In addition the individual is expected to present good-listening skills; demonstrate effective problem solving skills; be able to work with a diverse group of individuals, and be able to work flexible and evening hours. Bilingual English/Spanish is strongly preferred. Completion of a state mandated 40-hour domestic violence training and 5 hours of double staffing is required; can be completed upon hiring.

Level of Language Proficiency
