The Counselor of the Well-Being Institute is responsible for supporting the Coordinator in the day-to day administrative work of the newly created LGBTQ Well-Being Institute. The position is responsible for providing direct group and individual counseling with a focus on youth, older adults, people of color and those of transgender experience. The Counselor is supervised by the Coordinator, and collaborates with Center staff on education and wellness activities.  The position will work closely with our LGBTQ youth program and GSAs (Gay Straight Alliances) and LGBTQ older adults activities and services. The Counselor will supervise the Center’s volunteer group leaders and provide outreach and education to community organizations and agencies. 

Job responsibilities:

·        Provide confidential short and long-term counselling for both individuals and groups with youth, older adults, people of color and those of transgender experience as the target populations.

·        In collaboration with the Coordinator, develop and implement the Center’s LGBTQ youth, education and wellness programs

·        Coordinate with regional GSAs (Gay Straight Alliances) to build strong relationships around education, support and social activities

·        Plan and implement services for LGBTQ older adults and intergenerational activities

·        Provide training and support to volunteer group leaders at the Center

·        Represent the Center in various community settings including committees, boards and meetings

·        Conduct outreach and training to various community agencies and organizations

·        Initiate, maintain, and update accurate client referral reports, case notes, files, assessment forms, and other information as required

·        Maintain and report internal and external statistics to the Coordinator

·        Attend training courses, workshops, etc. as related to job requirements

·        Build working relationships with community organizations and resources

·        Attend and participate in various Center related activities and events including LGBTQ Pride, and other large scale events

·        Other job duties as assigned by Coordinator


Job Qualifications:

Minimum of a mental health graduate degree, plus:

·        Advanced clinical degree with professional New York State License required (eg. LCSW, LMHC, Psychologist)

·        Ability to use various theoretical frameworks in relation to individual/group needs

·        Ability to work flexibly with LGBTQ individuals who are navigating complex social, economic, and healthcare issues

·        Minimum of two years’  experience in providing supervised individual and group counselling

·        Strong understanding of unique societal factors and barriers to care faced by LGBTQ communities

·        Knowledge and awareness of community resources  

·        Experience working with LGBTQ youth, older adults, people of color and those of transgender experience preferred

·        Strong interpersonal skills

·        Strong assessment skills and proven ability to assess risk

·        Training, knowledge and demonstrated ability/competence in crisis theory and crisis intervention

·        Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of color, diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, those who identify as a part of the LGBTQ community, and persons with disabilities

·        Experience working with volunteers, preferably volunteer management or supervision

·        Written and verbal fluency in Spanish, preferred

·        Strong written and communication skills
