The Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition (MCRC) advances economic rights and equity through research, advocacy, consumer education, and direct service work. MCRC works to build a multi-racial, people-centered movement to expand economic protections and community reinvestment for working families, low-income communities, and communities of color. We work statewide, as well as at the City, county, and federal level. 

The Fair Housing Specialist is a new position at MCRC’s Fair Housing Action Center of Maryland. The Fair Housing Specialist will provide fair housing outreach, education, and intake services to identify and address unlawful housing discrimination in Maryland.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Outreach

Execute a strategic outreach plan to educate members of protected classes and service providers who work with them about fair housing rights. Activities include:

  • Conducting Know Your Rights trainings for community members and service providers;
  • Presenting to community groups;
  • Tabling at community events; and,  
  • Building relationships with nonprofits and other service provider organizations.

Fair Housing Complaints

Advocate on behalf of individuals alleging discrimination in housing. 

  • Evaluating client intakes and providing program/resource/legal referrals as appropriate;
  • Gathering information and following up with clients as needed for investigation and evaluation;
  •  Engaging in advocacy efforts on behalf of individual complainants, including drafting and submitting advocacy letters as well as requests for reasonable accommodations and/or modifications on behalf of clients;
  • Assisting complainants with administrative discrimination complaints with local, state, and/or federal agencies;
  • Serving as the representative for complainants during the complaint process at local, state, and/or federal agencies; and
  • Tracking and documenting complaints, outcomes, and other information to inform policy, program, and outreach efforts.

Other Duties

  • Develop and maintain records in accordance with grant compliance requirements;
  • Contribute to grant reports; and
  • Contribute to the organization-wide goals and objectives identified in MCRC’s strategic plan

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A successful candidate will have an educational background in education,

social work, human service, or a related field.

  • At least three years of experience in direct service work, preferably in housing or financial well-being
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Preference for bi-lingual English/Spanish speaker;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse organizations and people;
  • Experience delivering training to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Must have excellent written and oral communications;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple tasks; and
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends for outreach events and as needed.

COMPENSATION

  • Annual Salary: $45,000-$55,000, commensurate with experience
