Position: Communications Officer

Purpose: The role of the Communications Officer is to communicate Free To Shine’s mission, impact and organisational values to sponsors, donors, partners, and the general public through social media and website content, regular reports and by hosting visitors at the office. This role plays a key part in ensuring our communications are honest, respectful and educational for all stakeholders.

Location: Siem Reap, Cambodia

Key Responsibilities:

  • Model Free To Shine's values and associated behaviours at all times such as honesty, respect, integrity, transparency, fairness, flexibility, hard work, embracing challenges and teamwork.
  • Write and publish newsworthy stories on social media (Facebook and Instagram). Ensure this content is maintained, organised, scheduled in advance and in adherence to Free To Shine’s child protection and communication policies.
  • Write a monthly online newsletter (MailChimp) to subscribers. Manage and improve the effectiveness of this system.
  • Write and post a monthly blog to Free To Shine’s website.
  • Monitor relevant news and reports and share on Free To Shine’s news feed.
  • Write Quarterly Impact Reports.
  • Write the Annual Report, overseeing and editing contributions from the team.
  • Write other donor reports, for example House Build reports, as required.
  • Write and maintain up-to-date website content.
  • Front and back-end website management (using WordPress), with attention to SEO and Google Analytics.
  • Manage and delegate projects to the Communications Sub-Group.
  • Update brochures annually with fresh content and photos.
  • Write content for new collateral such as educational posters, brochures and videos.
  • Maintain a library of high resolution photos.
  • Film basic footage of our program, on occasion, for editing by our Australian team.
  • Oversee and proofread Annual Progress Reports.
  • Use Survey Monkey to gain data from target audiences, ie testimonials from sponsors.
  • Host and facilitate visitor experiences in collaboration with the Partnerships & Development Manager and/or the Communications Sub-Group.
  • Host a monthly online volunteer meeting.
  • Action and respond to general inquiries from potential volunteers, visitors, supporters and other contacts.
  • Conduct activities and events to build profile in Siem Reap.
  • Submit Free To Shine for appropriate industry awards to raise profile.
  • Write media releases and articles to be published in online and print newspapers/magazines (i.e. Huffington Post, Dumbo Feather).
  • Organise and maintain Dropbox function for Siem Reap office.
  • Manage the MD's email account.
  • Other tasks as required by the Managing Director.

Required Skills and Qualities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field.
  • At least 1 year paid or voluntary experience in writing and managing social media content for a business or charity.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • High level computer skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Proven ability working with WordPress, including widgets and plugins.
  • Experience with Online Newsletter services, e.g., MailChimp, is not necessary but would be highly valued.
  • SEO and Google Analytics knowledge and experience desirable.
  • Basic photo editing skills.
  • High degree of discretion dealing with confidential information.
  • Willingness to share knowledge and learn new skills.
  • Team-player with experience working in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Interest in women’s development, girls education and preventing sex-trafficking and must be dedicated to the vision and goals of Free To Shine.
  • A focus on high standards, quality and results.

  • Appointment to this position will require a satisfactory clearance of a Police Check.

Contract Length: Minimum 12 Months

Salary and Benefits: USD $750 per month+ 1 month salary bonus per year

Time Commitment: 40hrs per week, 7am – 4pm M-F

Support: There will be a two week hand-over with the current Communications Officer.
