Language Justice Coordinator

Reports to: Creative Operations Directors                                       

Work Location: Remote (NY, DC, Bay Area preferred)   

Position Summary:

The Language Justice (LJ) Coordinator will work to create a linguistically democratic space so that National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) staff and members can co create equitable communications that lead to a stronger domestic worker organizing movement. You will work closely with both of the Creative Operations Directors, and together you will provide coordination, administrative, program and event support for NDWA with the goal of cultivating alignment throughout the organization towards building a stronger multilingual alliance. The LJ Coordinator will facilitate communication among our staff members, LJ practitioners and members of the Alliance - enabling the full participation of our staff and members across languages, cultures, and traditions. They will promote language as a tool for engagement, mobilization, and empowerment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Organize and coordinate LJ interpretation and translation workflows from staff and keep detailed records 
  • Assign and manage translation and interpretation workflows within our network of consultants 
  • Asses and propose tailored LJ practices that address the linguistic needs of the different areas of work within the alliance 
  • Hire, orient new to NDWA language justice practitioners to NDWA’s LJ framework, 
  • Coordinate and manage a team of interpreters and translators for all large, in person events and meetings 
  • Build, support and maintain our network and relationships with interpreters and translators 
  • Update and expand our translation style guides and interpreter/translator database
  • Work with HR department to establish LJ protocol and staff orientation
  • Lead the implementation of LJ protocols throughout the organization
  • Create LJ materials and a material organization system for staff and membership (presentations, planning manual and systems, best practices guides, and trainings) 
  • Coordinate language learning for staff 
  • Organize and coordinate internal and rented interpretation equipment 
  • Collaborate with the Finance team to correctly code, fulfill and document invoices and manage consultant contracts 
  • Monitor changing language justice landscape and propose improvements and updates for the organization
  • Conduct LJ introductions and instructions for special remote and in person meetings and events 
  • Cultivate and empower staff leadership in creating multilingual spaces 
  • Time permitting, do short, quick-turnaround translations and ad-hoc interpreting for NDWA staff

Qualifications:

  • Required bilingual English/Spanish speaker and writer with excellent writing, editing, translation/interpretation and verbal communication skills in both languages
  • At least 5 years of related or comparable Language Justice experience at a national organization
  • Expertise, skill, interest and commitment in doing LJ and administrative work in the service of program and campaign goals
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and follow through on assignments
  • Experience working with a hybrid office-based and remote staff 
  • Detail oriented, with excellent time and project management skills including the ability to juggle multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently, and in partnership with a highly motivated team
  • Proficiency with computer operations and programs, specifically Google Suite and interpreting for Zoom
  • Experience working with individuals of varying technical backgrounds and skills
  • Dedication and ability to work flexible hours- especially one week before an Event, and the week of the Event 
  • Familiarity with both local grassroots organizations and national organizations
  • Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color.
  • Post COVID-19 pandemic, travel up to 25% of the year
