ABOUT THE MOCKINGBIRD SOCIETY

The Mockingbird Society is a non-partisan advocacy organization focused on transforming foster care and ending youth homelessness. We do this by creating, supporting, and advocating for racially equitable, healthy environments that develop youth and young adults at risk of or experiencing foster care or homelessness. Our efforts are rooted in and guided by the voices of the communities we serve and those with lived experience in the systems we are trying to change. Ultimately, we want each and every young person, regardless of race and individual experience, to reach adulthood with an equitable opportunity to thrive.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Development Manager’s priority focus and core strength will be in grant prospecting, grant writing and grants administration. Under the supervision of the Director of Development, the Development Manager will lead the grants program, which generates approximately 50% of agency revenues. In addition, the Development Manager will implement key strategies to support the fundraising activities of the organization: they will act as primary writer for donor/funder communications and stewardship, will assist with logistics for fundraising events, and will support other fundraising initiatives as needed. There is a tremendous opportunity to grow in all facets of managing a successful development department, including a pathway to becoming the Development Director at Mockingbird.


The successful candidate will have a passion for our mission, will be a skilled and effective grant writer, and will have a proven track record of success in fund development in nonprofit organizations. The Development Manager will also have a demonstrated commitment to equity in the work and the workplace being a priority.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Writing and Grants Management

Manage the agency’s grants program, including:

  • Research and propose potential funding opportunities.
  • Oversee the agency grants calendar.
  • Work in close collaboration with program and finance staff to develop, write, and submit proposals.
  • Monitor and Track all grant deliverables in partnership with Youth & Family Programs
  • Ensure timely preparation and submission of required grant reports and invoices.
  • Research opportunities to nominate staff for various public and private awards and coordinate with Development Director to write said nominations.


Campaign and Donor Management

  • Execute donor and funder communications in collaboration with the Director of Development, including fundraising campaign letters, new donor letters, major donor letters, gift acknowledgements, and other donor communications.
  • Provide support to Director of Development in donor cultivation and donor stewardship.


Event Management

Assist the Director of Development with the planning and execution of fundraising events, including:

  • Event logistics (venue, catering, décor, reservations/registrations, etc.).
  • Event marketing.
  • Materials production.
  • Securing and stewarding event sponsors.
  • Volunteer recruitment and coordination.
  • Assist Director of Development with audience development.


Department Operations

Provide support to the Director of Development as requested:

  • Assist with major gifts campaign logistics.
  • Assist with executing individual giving campaign logistics (year-end appeal, etc.)
  • Assist with the creation of annual development plans and help monitor the department’s budget and activities in accordance with established plans.
  • Plan, organize and implement programs to utilize corporations, businesses and individuals in meaningful volunteer opportunities that align with Mockingbird’s calendar of events.
  • Other duties as assigned.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience with, and/or commitment to having, race equity, social justice, and LGBTQ/cultural competence be a workplace priority.
  • At least 3 years of grant writing experience, with a proven success record in securing grants from foundation, corporate and government funders, is required.
  • At least 3 years of general nonprofit fundraising experience is preferred.
  • Ability to tell compelling, engaging stories both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and managing successful fundraising events, including logistics, sponsorships, and audience development, is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with email platforms such as iContact or Mail Chimp.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to maintain a positive, professional, and service-oriented demeanor toward a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to represent the organization at fundraising and community events; comfortable with public speaking.
  • Ability to work independently, meet competing deadlines, balance priorities, and follow through on assigned tasks to completion.
  • Familiarity with donor databases (Salesforce or similar).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Bachelor’s degree, or a comparable combination of education and experience, in fundraising, nonprofit management, communications, or related field. 


OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to perform physically; exerting 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds frequently.
  • Upon date of hire, must be able to pass a Washington State and national criminal history check.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, appropriate insurance and access to a vehicle or source of transportation for regular business use throughout Washington.
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends with occasional local travel, as needed.
