The Museum Education Fellowship Program is a hands-on experience where, along with research, workshops, and reading discussions, fellows receive rigorous on-the-job training and intensive mentorship in the theory and practice of museum pedagogy. Fellows play an integral role in supporting their dynamic departments. The Fellowship Program is both physically and intellectually demanding; successful candidates demonstrate diligence, critical thinking, and tenacity. While challenging, the program is also deeply rewarding. Fellows forge professional contacts, hone their career goals, and develop marketable skills in teaching and programming.
The Access, Adult, and Family Programs Fellow leads Guided Gallery Visits and offers logistical and pedagogical support for a portfolio of Education programs that advance our commitments to making the Museum accessible to all audiences. The Fellow observes and supports multiple programs for visitors with disabilities, including ASL Tours, Verbal Description and Touch Tours, and Brooklyn Afternoons. As a complement to this effort, the Fellow plans and facilitates academic tours for college and university classes, as well as the monthly Hands-On Art program which takes place during First Saturdays.
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in fine arts, education, art history, or cultural studies, though candidates from other academic backgrounds are welcome to apply
- Experience teaching and/or programming in formal or informal learning environments
- Investment in working with diverse museum audiences and supporting our mission, and a commitment to equity and social justice
- Familiarity with art-making or art history, and experience looking at and discussing art objects
- Ability to manage time effectively, including prioritizing tasks, maintaining calendars, blocking out work time, and balancing academic and logistical responsibilities
- Willingness to learn as part of a community, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, actively move throughout the Museum for up to 2.5 hours at a time, and spend periods of time distributing materials to and interacting with children who are seated on the floor
- Proof of ability to work in the United States is required. We do not sponsor visa applications, though past applicants have worked with international student organizations to secure visas for themselves.
Preferred, but not mandatory
- Experience teaching in an art museum or similar institution
- Experience teaching art-making
- Experience teaching elementary-aged children in school or out-of-school contexts
- Experience relevant to teaching neurodiverse audiences, such as:
- Familiarity with Universal Learning Design
- Experience teaching “self-contained” classes in school systems
- Learning experiences with people who have low or no vision, low or no hearing, and/or developmental/intellectual disabilities
- Studio art practice (such as drawing, painting, sculpture, or photography) and knowledge of traditional art mediums and techniques
- Familiarity with dis/ability theory and its intersectional connections to issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality
- Experience with and ability to personally reflect on dis/ability issues; active connections to disability communities are highly desired.
- Attend a six-week training program at the beginning of the Fellowship, which will require time spent outside work hours on reading and practicum preparations
- Design and teach up to two 1.5-hour Guided Gallery Visits for school groups per day, honing a personal pedagogical approach while maintaining School Programs' standards of excellence
- Assist the Access Programs Coordinator with the implementation of accessibility-related programs, which may include designing and teaching lessons, maintaining and preparing supplies, collaborating with instructors and volunteers, and conducting program evaluations and documentation
- Collaborate with the Family Programs Coordinator to plan and facilitate Hands-On Art during First Saturdays, which will require Saturday hours
- Participate in professional development sessions facilitated by our experienced Education and Curatorial staff, in order to complete the program with extensive experience teaching and programming for a variety of audiences
- Conduct qualitative research throughout the year to learn about museum education theory and practice, including reading and writing outside work hours, and present a completed research paper in June 2021
- Complete a professional teaching portfolio

Salary: $22,100 (subject to payroll taxes) plus benefits
Schedule: 35 hours per week, Tuesdays through Saturdays or Sundays through Thursdays, 9 am to 5 pm. Guided gallery visits occur on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 10 am to 1 pm. Some evening hours will be required.
