Shipping Operations Manager

Addgene is a unique nonprofit biorepository whose mission is to advance scientific discovery by facilitating sharing of research materials. Addgene archives these materials on behalf of researchers and distributes them worldwide. Addgene breaks down geographic, logistical, and financial barriers to obtaining high quality research materials. Although Addgene is a biotechnology organization, no science background is required for this role.


Addgene is currently seeking a Shipping Operations Manager to support our rapid growth. As part of the Business Operations Team, the Shipping Operations Manager will report to the Director of Business Development and work closely with our Customer Support Manager on a range of activities that advance Addgene’s mission and global reach. The Shipping Operations Manager will use customer feedback and order data to identify and overcome logistical issues and improve Addgene’s services. The Shipping Operations Manager will support Addgene’s domestic and international growth by maintaining relations with distributor/logistics partners and couriers. The Shipping Operations Manager will assist with efforts to increase efficiency and streamline operational processes, particularly as they relate to our distribution chain.

Job Description

The Shipping Operations Manager will fill a critical role on the Business Operations Team. As a repository for biological materials, Addgene must offer the most effective and reliable shipping and delivery to researchers worldwide to ensure that they receive their requested materials in excellent, lab-ready condition. The Shipping Operations Manager will be responsible for the following:


  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the Shipping Operations Team
  • Manage Shipping Operations Specialist(s)
  • Oversee the completion of all tasks related to order processing and shipping to ensure successful delivery of Addgene materials to requesting labs
  • Interface closely with the Customer Support Team to provide knowledgeable, friendly support to customers with shipping-related questions and concerns
  • Serve as point of escalation for shipping logistics challenges
  • Liaise with the other teams as necessary to ensure shipping related issues are resolved in a timely and efficient manner
  • Work closely with the Customer Support Manager to set, track, and report on team/departmental goals


  • Support Addgene’s growth and new business initiatives, including:
  • Customer Satisfaction - engage requesting scientists to obtain feedback on Addgene’s products and services and use feedback to drive operational improvements focused on increasing customer satisfaction
  • Manage and prioritize improvements related to order processing and shipping operations processes; interact closely with the Software Development Team on implementing solutions and improvements
  • Explore solutions to shipping logistics issues as they arise for existing catalog materials, as well as researching shipping strategies for any new material type that Addgene may choose to distribute in the future


  • Oversee the continued expansion of Addgene’s worldwide shipping operations
  • Manage Addgene’s international distributor and logistics partner relationships via regular communication
  • Manage Addgene’s courier relationships through proactive communications
  • As necessary, support the Business Development Team in the identification of new distributors and/or logistics partners and facilitate their integration with Addgene


  • Lead and participate in additional projects as necessary


Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2-3 years of experience with distribution, international logistics,  or shipping operations
  • Experience with shipping logistics of biological and/or frozen materials a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and turn strategy into action
  • Self-starter, with strong sense of ownership and proven teamwork skills
  • Detail oriented and highly organized with ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Strong decision making, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience with people and project management a plus
  • Experience in a client-facing role, motivated to meet customer needs
  • Ability to identify and drive opportunities for continuous improvement of systems
  • Strong written, verbal and communication skills
  • Experience with and excited about cross-team collaboration
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Excel) and Google Suite
