Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) is a not-for-profit local development corporation that serves as the primary champion for Downtown Brooklyn as a world-class business, cultural, educational, residential, and retail destination. Working together with the three business improvement districts (BID) that it manages – the MetroTech BID, Fulton Mall Improvement Association, and Court-Livingston-Schermerhorn BID – the Partnership manages over 1 million square feet of public space and undertakes diverse activities including attracting new investment and improving the environment for existing companies; facilitating infrastructure development that promotes an active and cohesive community; supporting and heralding the area’s cultural assets; and encouraging a unified sense of place and an engaged civic community.

Roles and Responsibilities 

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Finance + Operations (SVP) the Controller is responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of DBP and its three (3) affiliated BIDs. The primary responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct responsibility for all accounting systems and functions
  • Providing accurate monthly financial reports to DBP’s President, SVP, and department heads, and quarterly financial reports to the Boards
  • Assisting in the budgeting and planning process. Reviewing all financial plans and comparing to actual and prior year results with a view to identify, explain and correct variances as appropriate
  • Providing management and direction for Staff Accountant managing the Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Fixed Asset, and tax activities
  • Supervising cash management activities, including the review of timely collections of receivables, Positive Pay activities, timely funding of payroll and vendor disbursements, and review of cash balances for adequacy and fund transfer recommendations
  • Overseeing and implementing effective internal controls, ensuring the organization maintains compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting
  • Developing and refining accounting policies and procedures, and overseeing internal audits to ensure effective implementation
  • Ensuring the successful completion of organization’s financial audits, tax returns, and regulatory filings
  • Identifying areas for improvements to any and all policies and procedures while ensuring appropriate internal controls
  • Providing assistance to the SVP with board presentations

Qualifications 

Qualified candidates will have the following: 

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably with non-profit organizations, and a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in accounting
  • A strong proven command of business ledgers and GL software, proficiency in Sage Intacct and Mineral Tree preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time-management skills
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills and meticulous attention to detail 
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles, the preparation of financial statements, and non-profit management and governance
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team communications, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment, while working with many different stakeholders, and prioritizing deadlines/work load
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality, both in the office and with external partners
  • Experience with BIDs is a plus
