GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The paralegal/legal assistant provides litigation and case management support to Deputy Legal Director and Child Justice Team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

·      Maintain Deputy Legal Director’s Calendar(s) 

·      Assist with maintenance of Firm Calendar(s)

·      File court documents, manually and/or via MDEC

·      Calendar court proceedings, deadlines and monitor task assignment/completion manually and via CLIO or other case management system

·      File maintenance in case management system

·      Draft simple correspondence

·      Inventory discovery documents

·      Format discovery requests and responses

·      Compile, redact, Bates stamp documents for production

·      Elicit and maintain records from clients for discovery

·      Create file of discovery documents to produce

·      Prepare trial exhibits and summaries

·      Assist with client intake and case review

·      Maintain case assignment/tracking spreadsheet

·      Prepare retainer agreements for clients and experts

·      Place calls to clients, witnesses, financial institutions for attorneys

·      Provide support to answer incoming inquiries for services to Paralegal/Intake Coordinator

·      Provide legal research and basic motions drafting (entry of appearance/motion to continue)

·      Assist with creation of form letters, operations manuals, sample pleadings, and training materials

·      Complete required service documentation in thorough and timely manner

·      Participate in organization grant and contract reporting

·      Provide ongoing client support and case management

·      Attend firm trainings

·      Attend firm staff meetings

·      Other tasks as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

·      Outstanding grammar and proofreading skills

·      Exceptional attention to detail

·      Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision

·      Excellent communication skills

·      Excellent organizational skills to coordinate projects, tasks, filings

·      Ability to work with people of diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds

·      Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Pro, MDEC

·      Reliable transportation, driver’s license and insurance, and ability to travel throughout state as needed

·      Able to bend and lift up to 30 pounds

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

·      Work is primarily performed in an office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, and filing cabinets

·      Work requires ability to travel during the course of the work day

·      Occasionally requires the ability to move or transport supplies or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds, while ascending or descending stairs

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

·      Bachelor’s Degree preferred

·      Experience as Paralegal, Executive Assistance, Legal Assistant or Legal Secretary

·      Experience creating draft legal pleadings, discovery documents, letters, presentations, etc.

·      Education, experience or training involving victims of child abuse and interpersonal violence preferred

·      Spanish language skills desired
