POSITION DESCRIPTION

AMIGOS is looking for a motivated, dynamic, and self-directed individual who has experience and passion for mentoring diverse college-aged youth, collaborating with partner organizations, facilitating activities, managing group dynamics, leading a small staff team and coordinating logistics.

The Gap Director lead the staff team comprised of a Program Coordinator and a Health and Wellness Coordinator. They will lead and facilitate a leadership, service and cultural exchange pod program in Costa Rica. This person will always be with the group and stay at the group lodging location. The Program Director works closely with the staff team to implement a comprehensive and enriching program Costa Rica. This is a full-time seasonal position.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

Volunteer Support

·        Mentor, supervise and lead a group of 10-20 volunteers

·        Monitor volunteer program progress with appropriate paperwork.

·        Support in conflict resolution within group dynamics and lead group processing sessions.

·        Engage volunteers in fun, creative and challenging activities.

Staff Team Leadership

·        Set a positive, open, and inclusive tone of the team.

·        Incorporate team-bonding and team-building activities throughout the program.

·        Conduct performance evaluations of team members.

·        Effectively delegate tasks amongst the team.

·        Support, as needed, to resolve team disputes or conflicts

Program Planning & Set-Up

·        Visit all program sites during the first week in country and spend time with all local providers and partner agencies.

·        Visit/call the clinics and hospitals to fully understand COVID-19 and other health protocols.

·        Lead the development of a detailed program itinerary.

·        Review and make changes to (if needed) existing curriculum and learn to facilitate activities.

·        Confirm all program logistics.

Budget & Finance

·        Accountable for the overall budget, tracking of expenses and ethical use of funds.

·        Manage and track expenses with weekly reports and submit to Program Manager.

·        Support team members in tracking expenses.

Program Implementation and Management 

·        Create and maintain relationships with partner agencies and local providers that are based on mutual respect, effective communication and collaboration, and shared visions of involving youth as actors in community development initiatives and cross-cultural exchange. 

·        Develop and maintain regular contact with partner agencies and local providers to ensure adequate performance of gap year program volunteers. 

·        Provide timely and appropriate communication with a wide range of individuals. Ensure prompt follow-up of inquiries and actions. 

·        Manage and support program logistics for briefing/quarantine, Spanish classes, program activities, lodging, transport and food. 

·        Facilitate workshops, trainings and seminars in both English and Spanish. 

·        Brainstorm creative and new ways to enhance the gap volunteer experience. 

Health and Safety Management  

·        Monitor volunteer health and safety and respond as needed. 

·        Abide by and enforce the AMIGOS Standards of Conduct. 

·        Agree to be on-call 24/7 for emergent issues that arise with volunteers for the duration of the Gap Program on a rotating schedule. 

·        Report to the Health & Wellness Coordinator with any concerns.

Monitoring & Evaluation

·        Facilitates participatory evaluations with all program volunteers, staff, partner agencies and service providers.

·        Provides full report on best practices to run the program for future cycles.

·        Conducts performance evaluations with volunteers to support in their growth and development over the course of the program

Other 

·        Network and build strong relationships with partner agencies, new organizations, and all program contacts. 

·        Serve as a public ambassador for AMIGOS within Costa Rica through interactions with program volunteers, community contacts, and the entire network of AMIGOS stakeholders.

Cultural Competency

·        Uses tact and sensitivity in interactions with all AMIGOS constituents (eg. professionalism, proper attire, culturally sensitive communication with partner agencies)

·        Provides effective support and guidance for diverse youth volunteers

·        Communicates effectively in English & Spanish and can serve as a translator

Community Engagement

·        Implements positive community development strategies with host communities & partner agency representatives

·        Utilizes effective methodologies for evaluating AMIGOS projects and making recommendations for the future

·        Successfully mobilizes resources for the project


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS 

·        Strong interpersonal and communication skills in Spanish and English, including spoken and written Spanish fluency and translation 

·        Experience working internationally in Central America, ideally in Costa Rica 

·        Strong time management skills and ability to delegate tasks 

·        Able to work in a remote environment 

·        Excellent group facilitation and training skills 

·        Adaptable and flexible to the needs of the programs and volunteers  

·        Previous experience working directly with young people 

·        Ability to problem solve in a culturally sensitive way 

·        Committed to incorporating social justice frameworks, including program activities on anti-racism and decolonization

·        Proficiency in Microsoft Office, and willingness to learn customer relationship management software 

·        Ability to obtain CR visa


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

·        Bachelor’s degree in education, international studies, or another related field 

·        Wilderness First Responder, Wilderness First Aid or Advanced First Aid Certification

·        Experience leading a team.

·        Previous experience with the AMIGOS organization as a volunteer or summer staff member or with a similar organization leading experiential group immersion experiences.

·        Vaccinated for COVID-19


COVID-19 PROTOCOLS & PRECAUTIONS

This program will be operating during the global COVID-19 pandemic. This means that all staff and students must abide by strict protocols to minimize COVID-19 exposure and contagion. Despite the preventive and precautionary measures, AMIGOS cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed nor contact COVID-19. Given the ever-changing state of the virus, protocols may be adjusted or changed at any time throughout the program. These expectations apply whether or not you are vaccinated.

 

If you wish to apply to this role you must adhere to the following:

·        Self-Quarantine of 10 days before departure to mitigate the risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19.

·        COVID-19 PCR Nasal test 72 hours before departure which will be dependent on a negative test result.

·        14-day quarantine upon arriving in CR—No personal travel prior to the start of the program.

·        Wearing a mask at all times and maintaining social distancing until the pod is tested for COVID and has negative test results.

·        Wearing a mask in transit, in public places, anytime outside of the pod for the duration of the program.

·        Free time and free days cannot be taken off-site.

·        Frequent hand washing and cleaning of the space.

·        Strict enforcement of protocols with the volunteers and leading by example.

·        Agree to additional quarantine and/or period of isolation as indicated by AMIGOS Medical Director.

·        Reports directly to the Costa Rica Country Coordinator

·        Responsible to the Latin American Programs Director 

·        Interacts frequently with other Headquarters staff departments and with partner agency contacts in Costa Rica.
