About the Job 

We are looking for a visionary leader to help CCI drive toward our vision that “everyone has fair, just, and inclusive opportunities to be healthy.” As a member of the Program Leadership Team, the Director will (1) oversee current program implementation, (2) proactively identify new opportunities to advance CCI’s mission,  (3) create and manage strategic relationships with partners, (4) mentor, train, and develop staff, and (5) guide large scale adoption and adaptation of the solutions that are developed in programs. Key to this role is CCI's unique "ways of working" that combines quality improvement, human-centered design, systems thinking, equity frameworks, and trauma-informed approaches to making and sustaining change. 

This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative team that is beginning to implement our 5-year strategic plan focused on building resilient partnerships and supporting digital transformation throughout the health care ecosystem.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities   

Program Development & Management (60%): 

  • Direct a portfolio of work focused on new solutions and approaches to advance health equity in marginalized and historically underinvested communities.  
  • Oversee program implementation, including establishing high-level timelines, supervising staff, establishing clear lines of communication between all involved parties, and guiding adaptation of program work when needed. 
  • Ensure programs incorporate CCI’s "ways of working” including human-centered design, systems thinking, and quality improvement that is equity-centered and trauma-informed. 
  • Manage project budget and operations in partnership with the Operations team. 

 

Strategy, Business Development & Relationship Management (20%):  

  • Proactively identify new opportunities to advance CCI mission, including partnering with the Executive Leadership Team to develop and pitch funding proposals for new and existing funders.  
  • Stay on top of emerging solutions and policy trends relevant for health equity in marginalized and underinvested communities.  
  • Build and maintain relationships with mission-aligned organizations to grow the impact of CCI’s program work.   
  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team and Operations team to grow CCI’s revenue streams, implement our strategic plan, scale the impact of our work, strengthen employee engagement, and evolve our organizational capabilities as we become an independent nonprofit.  
  • Work with evaluators, when applicable, on research and evaluation of CCI's impact.  
  • Analyze data and present results of progress in initiatives to CCI’s internal team and partners. 

Leadership & People Management (20%):    

  • Responsible for managing 2-4 direct reports, including hiring, training, and mentoring staff.  
  • Responsible for providing ongoing feedback and staff development, and managing annual performance review evaluations and conversations.  
  • Collaborate with managers and senior leadership on organizational initiatives and contribute to working groups to improve and strengthen programmatic operations.  

Required Qualifications   

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a health-related field, including public health, health care administration, provision of health care or support services, social work, etc. 
  • Deep understanding of the health care or social services safety net and direct lived and/or implementation experience in health or social service delivery in marginalized and underinvested communities. 
  • 10 + years of experience managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes. 
  • 5+ years in a team management or leadership role.  
  • Expertise in organizational change/management (how to coach organizations in adopting new change practices).  
  • Experience working in a team environment and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with a broad range of partners. 
  • Experience in managing, developing, coaching, and retaining individuals and teams, empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility, span-of-control and performance. 
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, servant leader mindset, and a commitment to and passion for CCI’s mission and values. 

 

Preferred Qualifications    

  • Experience working at or with a local, state or federal agency, a foundation, a healthcare provider, or a Medicaid managed care plan. 
  • Knowledge of or experience with quality improvement, human-centered design, systems thinking, equity frameworks, and/or trauma-informed system approaches.   
  • Experience leading successful adult learning opportunities, such as learning collaboratives, or infusing adult learning principles into learning opportunities.  
  • Experience with a placed-based and/or health ecosystem approach (i.e., multi-sector). 
  • Experience using  Microsoft Office and other information management tools such as Notion, and Salesforce.  

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities  

  • Effective empathetic listening and clear communication skills. Capable of connecting with diverse audiences and working across multiple stakeholders, from frontline clinic staff to health plan CEOs.  
  • Adaptable to evolving projects, open to novel approaches, and capable of iterating and changing course as needed and doing so with humility, curiosity, and open reflection. 
  • Analytical thinker who can use data to identify system limitations and reimagine service delivery for diverse populations. Experience solving complex, systemic problems with a people-centered, data driven approach. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to work well in a team. 
  • Proven ability to create and communicate an inspiring vision with clarity and conviction. 
  • Experience in building and supporting organizational cultures of innovation and continuous learning. 

 

Location   

Although CCI allows staff to work from home, Program Directors are part of CCI's senior leadership team, with additional expectations of working in-person intermittently from the CCI office in downtown Oakland. All staff are expected to attend in-person program events as well as CCI-wide team and community building events.  For this role, you must be based on the West Coast, with a strong preference for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  

 

Compensation + Classification   

CCI is committed to paying competitive wages. To continue our commitment to equity – and because we understand that salary negotiations inherently have an unfair bias – we do not participate in a salary negotiation process for any candidate. Salaries for each position are uniform company-wide and non-negotiable. The Program Director role corresponds to CCI’s level 5A-5C, with an annual salary of $138,900-$152,900. The exact level and corresponding salary will be determined by the Hiring Manager.  

This is a full-time exempt position and will report to CCI’s Vice President, Programs.
