The Financial Literacy Specialist, while focused on finances, will work directly with program participants improving their financial wellbeing, working holistically with participants to identify strengths and problem solve around challenges toward promoting economic mobility. The Financial Literacy Specialist will teach, train and guide participants to improve their financial literacy and improve their decision-making skills regarding budgeting, credit and money management. This position will also make linkages and referrals to various benefit programs as necessary to help support participants overall economic wellbeing. Program participants will present with various levels of financial literacy and education levels. As a result, the Financial Literacy Specialist will need to use various teaching strategies and methods to meet all of the participants’ needs. This position will work closely with the Adult Education Program Specialist, Senior Manager of Learning and Development, the Workforce Development Coordinator as well as various program managers.


  • Adhere to all laws and requirements regarding confidentiality, professional ethics, child and adult protective services, contractual agreements, etc.;
  • Ensure all participants progress and notes describing work together are input into ETO accurately and weekly;
  • Connect participants to other resources internal and external to Glide, such as mental health support or job placement services;
  • Responsible for the coordination of services to educate, train and guide participants regarding financial decisions and budgeting tools;
  • Coordinate and implement individual and group trainings for participants to attend to increase proficiency in the area of financial health and to sustain independently to the best of their ability;
  • Assist in enrolling participants regarding eligible benefits and the rules that govern these benefits, i.e. SNAP, SSI/SSDI etc.;
  • Conduct assessments to identify each participant’s strengths and needs and establishes individual mobility goals and monitor progress;
  • Assist participants through problem solving, direct support, intervention, de-escalation and mediation as necessary;
  • Utilize a trauma sensitive and coaching orientation in work with participants;
  • Provide one to one personal financial coaching to low income adults around budgeting, banking, asset development, credit score management, debt reduction and management, and financial planning for the future, among other financial topics;
  • Run a baseline assessment with each participant;
  • Conduct routine assessments to track progress with each participant;
  • Willing to be trained in new teaching methodologies;
  • Other duties as assigned;


  • Ability to deal with difficult interactions. Strong conflict resolution skills. Able to defuse potentially volatile situations with patience and tact;
  • Ability to prioritize work and multi-task within specific timelines;
  • Adhere to professional boundaries and standards. Understand and follow basic ethics, values and principles of social work practice, including those mentioned above;
  • Working knowledge of case management principles and community resources;
  • Experienced based understanding of coaching and mentoring practices and skills, especially around economic mobility and financial literacy;
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of promoting economic mobility and financial literacy for low income adults;
  • Knowledge of homelessness, housing subsidies, and other housing issues;
  • Strong organizational skills and high level of attention to detail;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Exercise sound judgment in interactions with others;
  • Works well under pressure and manages stress effectively in a demanding and fast paced environment;
  • Demonstrates Cultural Humility. Has the ability to work effectively across cultures;

  • Bachelor’s degree in social service, Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or related field required OR equivalent experience of 1+ year working with socially and/or economically marginalized families with challenges negotiating their preferred relationships to multiple problems, or an equivalent of education and experience;
  • Experience working in a community based social service agency with people in relationship with homelessness and poverty and the problems that often come alongside these experiences;
  • Experience working in and/or alongside other systems that often affect the lives of poor and marginalized families.


  • Must be open to obtaining any certificates or licenses necessary to be an Financial Literacy Specialist



  • Exceptionally strong communication skills;
  • Proficiency in spelling, grammar and writing needed to draft detailed instructions, service plans, correspondence, memos, and other required documentation.


  • Basic mathematical skills



  • Competent in the use of a computer, specifically MS Office Suite

  • Activities that occur frequently are: sitting, standing, walking, and handling. Activities that occur infrequently are: bending, crouching, kneeling, twisting, reaching straight above and below shoulder level, carrying and lifting up to 25 pounds;
  • Ability to sit for minimum periods of one hour at a time, and come and go from the work area repeatedly throughout the day. Ability to move quickly to address emergency or potentially dangerous situations. Ability to move about the building and the organization as needed;
  • As this position requires periods of sitting and repetitive use of a telephone, computer and other office equipment, this person must take frequent short breaks and integrate stretching into her/his daily duties to avoid musculoskeletal disorders;
  • Ability to use public and/or private modes of transportation. Duties are office based, but travel to various San Francisco venues may be required

  • Community based social service office environment that serves residents who can struggle with their relationships to anger and fear in ways that can manifest as aggressive behavior;
  • Potential exposure to a range of pests and other occupational hazards related to working in a housing site in the Tenderloin;
  • Noise level is moderate and lighting is conducive to completion of work;
  • Glide is located in the Tenderloin, a high-crime neighborhood. Due to our surroundings, it is important to always be aware of what’s going on around you while walking around the neighborhood.
