Senior Project Director, Equity Initiatives

IHI seeks an experienced colleague with a relentless vision of creating a more just and equitable world for patients, individuals, and communities. As an integral IHI team member and organizational leader, the Senior Project Director is responsible for driving successful planning and execution of projects as well as developing and presenting content within the area of health and health care equity. The Senior Project Director builds and fosters meaningful, effective relationships with customers, funders, partners, teams, and individual staff members to achieve IHI's mission and develop the next generation of leaders.


Position Responsibilities:

In partnership with IHI's VP of Delivery over equity initiatives and a team of passionate colleagues, the Senior Project Director drives the strategy and implementation of a portfolio of equity related projects in the US and advises on equity strategy and initiatives globally. This includes:


High-Level Project Management and Content Expertise

  • Apply deep experience and fluency in health and health care equity
  • Provide leadership to strategic IHI equity initiatives, including the launch and implementation of a national equity campaign for health care organizations
  • Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for IHI's equity initiatives and content, coordinating effectively internally at IHI and externally in the field with partners and audiences through speaking engagements, presentations, and media inquiries
  • Actively contribute to IHI's content and product strategy for equity, including areas for innovation and research & development, dissemination strategy, supporting the content strategy for IHI's conferences, and identifying new program ideas and other areas for growth and development
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, funders, partners, and faculty; negotiate difficult conversations to a desired end while maintaining trust and respect
  • Actively promote the diversity of IHI's faculty and staff by identifying and developing emerging leaders from projects and programs
  • Facilitate, synthesize, develop, and teach in the content area of health equity internally and externally
  • Along with Improvement Advisors, teach and apply IHI's core methodology of improvement science (e.g., Model for Improvement, reliability, spread) to accelerate partner results; coach individual teams to maintain pace


Organizational Leadership and Relationship Management

  • Organizational Strategy and Business Development
  • Together with the Vice President of Delivery overseeing equity work at IHI and other leaders, develop, evolve, and execute on a strategy for achieving Impact, Reach, and Vitality within the area of health equity
  • Participate in vetting and decision-making around new business opportunities for both IHI-initiated programming, grant- and contract-funded work
  • Leverage internal and external customer relationships to achieve IHI's strategy
  • Embedding and Integrating Equity Across IHI
  • Help facilitate a system of harvesting and learning within IHI's collection of equity initiatives to ensure lessons learned from one project are transferable to another; contribute to the evolution of IHI's equity content theory(ies) over time; and articulate IHI's value to customers
  • Actively participate in a cross-departmental team focused on the integration of internal and external equity work across IHI, interfacing with IHI's Equity Advisory Group
  • Along with other IHI leaders, coach and advise IHI teams on embedding and integrating equity in team operations, content, and methods
  • Internal and External Relationship Management
  • Communicate clear vision for IHI's work and the work of the team connected to it
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with IHI staff at all levels
  • Clearly communicate complex subjects internally and externally
  • Influence outcomes in difficult/complex conversations internally and externally
  • Represent IHI on external advisory groups and professional committees


Staff Development

  • Funnel decision-making downward, empowering staff and sharing ownership
  • Actively contribute to staff development and long-term succession planning
  • Supervise, mentor, and coach others; serve as a mentor and resource to effectively develop IHI Directors


Sr. Director Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and experience with health and health care equity
  • Project management skills, including being detail-focused and managing towards aggressive timelines
  • Ability to navigate transition and change
  • Understand market and external landscape
  • Able to maneuver through complex political situations to achieve desired outcomes
  • Able to think about whole systems, rather than optimize for one part
  • Excellent communication skills (both interpersonal and written), including superior presentation skills
  • Create a compelling vision and build motivation with internal and external team
  • Able to effectively coach and motivate customer teams
  • Apply equity principles to content and team development
  • Able to build and maintain relationships across and outside the organization
  • Experience developing employees and providing effective feedback
  • Drive to effectively develop self and others
  • Able to actively support, communicate, and teach the unique culture and values of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, including Equity, Trust, Courage, and Love
  • Commitment to equity, anti-racism, and the improvement of societal systems


Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree or commensurate experience highly preferred
  • At least ten years' experience working in the field of health care required, with a high level of demonstrated experience working in the area of health equity
  • At least five years of experience leading teams of professionals preferred
  • Experience leading staff teams with a high degree of interpersonal and cultural sensitivity and trust
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint is required
  • Training and experience with improvement science required
  • Training in/commitment to equity required
  • Presentation, group facilitation and public speaking skills required; experience facilitating conversations on race and equity issues preferred
