Powerful Voices’ mission is to create brave spaces with girls* of color to take charge of their own power as leaders, igniting their abilities to confidently express themselves, build community, and act against injustices affecting their lives. Since 1995, Powerful Voices provides support for girls* of color in and outside schools and the juvenile justice system. We provide social justice-focused, all-girl* experiences for girls* of color ages 12-18. Young folx qualify if they reside or attend school in central, southeast and southwest Seattle.

Powerful Voices (PV) is hiring for three (3) full-time Program Managers to join our direct service programs team. The Program Manager is responsible for developing, overseeing, and facilitating Powerful Voices’ programming to middle school and/or high school girls* in the Seattle area. This role will be working collaboratively in a team of several Program Managers and a Program Director.

You will sculpt dynamic and meaningful programming that resonates with what youth want. In some cases, you will enhance existing programming. In other cases, you will design new ways to engage with girls* of color (including finding meaningful ways to interact remotely). We hold each other to our values of anti-adultism, anti-racism, social justice activism, and transparency.

- Anti-Adultism - belief that young folks are the experts of their own experiences and we must work to shift and increase the power of young folks. Adultism is where adults have unearned power over young people that is reinforced by institutions and social norms.
- Anti-racism - actions which are meant to counter racial prejudice, systemic racism, and the oppression of marginalized racial groups.
- Social justice - the active commitment for equal opportunity, treatment, and rights in health, economic, education, political, and juvenile justice systems that is centered in community building, collective care, and mutual liberation.
- Activism - movement and action to bring about social and systemic change; in our programs, we provide activism curriculum that encourage girls* to develop critical thinking, knowledge and skills so they can act to make the world a better place.
We are looking for someone with experiences that are aligned with our mission, who possess persistence and drive, and is comfortable adapting to changing working conditions. This role will be critical in creating an interactive and brave space for young people through the co-creation of activities to explore relationships between power, privilege, identity, and systems through a social justice lens.
Here are some of the primary responsibilities you may expect to undertake:
Program Management (75%)
- Provide a strengths-based, girl* specific, relationship-based approach to all services for young folx
- Lead overall facilitation of group sessions in collaboration with staff and guest facilitators; ensure group dynamics promote safety, engagement, youth voice, and leadership
- Lead and refine pre-existing programs such as Powerful Choices, PV Radio, DYVAS, and Black Muslimah Collective
- Create and deliver multi-week curriculums that consist of out-of-school and/or in-school group activities on skills and topics such as: identity, healthy relationships, oppression, activism, presentation skills, workshop development, group facilitation, etc.
- Establish individualized relationships with young folx to provide support, goal setting, and engage their critical thinking
- Support program team with hiring additional program roles to broaden the scope of programs delivered; Act as supervisors for these incoming Program Specialists
- Maintain appropriate boundaries with young people with clear understanding and execution of role as a facilitator, youth advocate, and adult ally.
- Facilitate regular partnership meetings with schools and service partners
- Maintain community and family engagement and coordinate any planned public events showcasing the girls’ work/projects at the end of each program
- Work with other Powerful Voices staff to cross-collaborate on programs, design ways to engage youth in remote programming, elevate new thinking; support important youth-led events like Girlvolution, and other efforts
Organizational Support (15%)
- Collaborate with Powerful Voices employees and Board of Directors to achieve the mission and vision of the organization
- Perform in a way that reflects the values of Powerful Voices: safety and health, justice, integrity, respect, diversity, and innovation
- Build organizational capacity and participate in efforts to support innovation, collaboration and creativity to advance the organizational goals and increase Powerful Voices’ impact with the community; such activities will provide shared leadership opportunities and will support the professional growth of all staff
- Participate in the strategic planning process affecting Powerful Voice’s future; build key strategies for long-term strategic direction set for 2-5 years.
- Maintain comprehensive program records, evaluation and data collection; utilize Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendars, Microsoft Office and similar tools to communicate and coordinate in a team setting
- Participate in staff team building activities, attend community events, and otherwise contribute to strengthening the deep roots within our community, both internally and externally.
Program Specific Descriptions:

Program Manager - Powerful Choices
- Lead and facilitate Powerful Choices programs
- Powerful Choices: An in-school program for middle school students that includes weekly program and monthly 1:1s with the girls* centering the topics of community building, identity, centering Black girl*hood, and healthy relationships.
- Black Girls* Create: A 6 weeks art program for Black and African identifying girls* to tap into their creative side while discussing social justice topics.
- Black Muslimah Collective: A 12 weeks cohort-style program centered around the Black Muslim girl’s* experience. Program activities consist of group facilitated discussions, supporting community members through outreach and volunteerism, as well as spiritual retreats, field trips, and mentorship activities.
Program Manager - PV Radio
- Lead and facilitate the Powerful Voices Radio program
- PV Radio: An all girl* of color-led media platform for young people to take their power through creating, producing, and editing content relevant to them and their communities
- Specific experience:
- Preferred experience editing audio content with Adobe Audition, Audacity, and GarageBand; Strong storytelling/journalism background (how to construct a captivating story in a clear way;) and experience with collaborative media production.
Program Manager - Employment
- Lead and facilitate Employment programs
- Activistas: 12 week social justice employment program where youth participants dive into social justice topics and issues impacting girls* of color. Young people will be able to build their public speaking, facilitation skills, and create a 1 hour workshop to present at the Girlvolution conference to share their experiences.
- DYVAS: 7 week creative program where youth participants will work as a team to create a zine of their art, poetry, and writing related to social justice issues.
GENERAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCES
Demonstrated experience may include or can be a combination of lived experience, educational experience, work experience, volunteer experience, and non-traditional experience. The successful candidate will possess many or most of the following qualifications:
- Effective champion for youth voice; comfortable showing solidarity with youth by being a witness as they speak their truth, lead, and teach; build solidarity with girl-identifying communities
- Experience serving youth of color ages 12-18; experience in gender-specific education, strengths-based programming, and/or motivational interviewing; workshop facilitation experience on topics of social justice and oppression
- Skillful management of group dynamics to ensure productive and safe group experiences for youth
- Strong track record of program leadership and coordination including curriculum development, group facilitation, budget monitoring, project and partnership management; experience applying best practices such as Youth Program Quality Assessment desired
- Experience developing and maintaining relationships with program partners and community volunteers
- Demonstrated cultural responsiveness and a strong social, racial, gender and economic justice framework
- Strong written and oral communication skills; openness to feedback; conflict resolution
- Critical problem-solving skills and a love for tackling challenges and creating best practices
- High levels of integrity, trustworthiness, flexibility, compassion, humor, creativity, and persistence necessary to address the practicalities of a growing nonprofit organization
- Bachelor’s level degree, or minimum of three years’ of equivalent work experience in youth work related fields, preferably in a non-profit or educational setting.
- Fluency in any of the following languages is preferred: Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Tagalog, Amharic, or Oromo.
- Local to the Greater Seattle area preferred
This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), exempt position at 40 hours/week. Our office is open 9:00am-5:00pm, though there is room for flexible scheduling that values individual wellness.
- During this period of COVID-19 and social distancing, work is performed in a hybrid model with the majority of the work home, with optional in-office setting, and occasional in-person events.
- All staff are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination
- Powerful Voices employees spend about 80% of their time working on the computer; Powerful Voices will also provide staff with a laptop and other reasonable resources that would support a comfortable remote work environment.
- Physical demands may require occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds, long periods of computer work and phone usage, and remaining in an office space, either standing or sitting for prolonged periods
- WA State driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle preferred, but not necessary. Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
SALARY & BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $69,000 (this is equivalent to $28.85 - $33.17/hour); Depending on Experience, where experience is assessed as a combination of lived experience, professional experience, educational experience, nontraditional experience, etc.
- Medical & Dental: Powerful Voices provides full medical/dental/vision benefits for employees who work full-time
- Holidays & Time Off: 18 paid holidays a year and 20 days Paid Time Off (PTO) for full-time employees. We have instituted a Floating Holiday system where you can choose 7 of your own holidays to reflect your culture, community, and values
- Transportation: Employees who use personal vehicles for Powerful Voices’ business will be reimbursed at a standard rate and/or Powerful Voices will reimburse employees for utilizing public transportation
- Professional Development Trainings: PV has a separate fund for each staff member to attend trainings and workshops that staff find relevant to professional growth
- Trauma Stewardship: hour-long monthly meetings and one-on-one quarterly meetings with our Trauma Stewardship counselor to process through life, work, second-hand trauma with young folks, etc.
- Wellness Fund: $20 per month to spend on activities or objects that you use to keep yourself well (ex. gym membership, massage, concert ticket, etc.)
- Self-Care: 4 personal hours of self-care per month that can be counted as work hours
