Description

The Boat Build Program Director is the lead direct-service provider for the Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory’s Boat Build Program, a year-round out-of-school time (OST) apprenticeship in boat building and maritime arts for high-school-aged youth. The Boat Build Program Director reports directly to the Executive Director and ensures that the program accurately reflects the mission, vision and objectives of the organization.


Direct Service


  • Develop and facilitate daily programming for the Boat Build Program during the academic year and 6-week summer session according to best practices in positive youth development, agency policy and contractual obligations
  • Recruit and retain Boat Build apprentices for the academic year program (36 seats) and summer WorkReady program (13 seats)
  • Facilitate boatbuilding/carpentry skill-building curriculum including: use of materials and tools, joinery skills, finish work
  • Organize and lead regular field trips and occasional overnights, including transporting students in the company van
  • Collaborate with apprentices and partner organizations in planning and executing youth-led showcase events at the culmination of each program season
  • Maintain safe and positive program culture in accordance with organizational practices and positive youth-development standards


Administrative Duties and Responsibilities


  • Oversee and supervise Program Assistant
  • Manage budget for Boat Build program
  • Complete program assessments and evaluations as instructed by the Clinical Director and/or Executive Director
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of all activities as well as student and family interactions
  • Support agency leadership in telling the story of the program and its impact on students to organizational stakeholders
  • Recruit, train, and support program volunteers
  • Manage contracts and staff for fee-for service programs


Infrastructure and Facilities


  • Maintain Boat Build equipment and resources, including hand-tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Manage and maintain inventory of supplies for Boat Build program
  • Maintain boat shop for safety, utility, educational purposes
  • Maintain the organization’s fleet of vessels used by the Sailing and RiverGuide programs


Requirements


·      Bachelor’s degree required

·      Expertise in traditional wooden-boat-building construction methods

·      Experience working with high-school-aged youth

·      Commitment to supporting positive youth development

·      Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently

·      Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence

·      Demonstrated understanding of the impact of social injustice on mental health and wellbeing of PWBF youth

·      Strong administrative skills and attention to detail

·      Excellent time-management skills

·      Valid driver’s license

·      Successful completion of Pennsylvania child abuse and Federal FBI criminal clearances

·      Spanish speaking desired
