Senior Accountant—Finance

(Full-time, permanent, non-union position)

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the integrity and timely presentation of our Statement of Activities, including trial balance analysis and supporting schedules; and supports the Controller and Associate Controller regarding the Statement of Financial Position.


  • Three to five years' nonprofit experience in accounting or finance
  • Proficiency in mid-level accounting systems
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with Accounts Payable and Receivable preferred
  • Experience with Abila MIP a plus
  • Museum or cultural nonprofit experience a plus


  • Ensure the integrity and timely extraction of information from systems recording Contributions and the performance of steps needed to update our general ledger with:
  • Contributions
  • Other earned income
  • Merchandise sales
  • Admissions and programs
  • Maintain Accounts Receivable module to process and record fees, rentals, and miscellaneous earned income
  • Oversee the submission of the New York City DCA Obligation Plan and ensure New York City support is reported and used correctly
  • Prepare analyses for various Statement of Financial Position accounts, including contributions and grants receivable, other receivables, accounts payable, some accrued expenses, and deferred revenue
  • Oversee the maintenance of documentation and schedules to support the validity of Contributions and the classification of net assets, with or without donor restriction
  • Use online business banking for balance inquiries, wires, and other transfers
  • Assist with annual audit, including but not limited to preparing documentation, schedules, and reports
  • Review and post payroll-related journal entries
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned
