Movement Law Lab (MLL or the Lab), seeks a full-time Operations Manager to join our team.

The Operations Manager will lead Movement Law Lab’s administrative operations, coordinate travel and logistical support for events (domestic and international), serve as assistant to the Director, and provide basic branding/communications support. This position will report to the MLL Director and work closely with MLL partners and MLL’s fiscal sponsor.

About Movement Law Lab

Movement Law Lab is committed to building power in marginalized communities of color by growing the field of movement lawyering. Movement lawyering strategically combines law and community organizing to protect, defend, and embolden social movements. Movement Law Lab is building the field of movement lawyering by:

  •  Incubating movement lawyering start-ups and providing them with the financial, technical, and strategic support they need to launch and grow.
  •  Hosting fellowships and innovation residencies for movement lawyers to launch, scale, replicate or expand brilliant movement lawyering projects that democratize law and build the power of marginalized people.
  •  Directly partnering with movements to design, incubate and launch legal infrastructure for burgeoning campaigns, fights and movement moments.
  • Training lawyers and legal organizations seeking to transition their approach towards movement lawyering.
  •  Organizing networks of movement lawyers to share skills, exchange lessons, and jointly tackle pressing challenges.
  •  Supporting the leadership of a new generation of movement lawyers--especially people ofcolor, women, queer, transgender and people coming from low-income backgrounds.

Our goal is to launch, build, and steward a new generation of dynamic, collaborative and versatile legal organizations with the expertise to use the law to transform our world.

Position Overview

The Operations Manager must have a strong ability to forecast and plan multiple projects several months in advance and adapt plan implementation as needed, strong troubleshooting skills, excellent attention to detail, and consistent communication to keep other staff/partners on task while working remotely. The ideal person is a quick learner, thorough, comfortable with giving/receiving feedback, and committed to high-quality work product.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

I. Operations Administration (30%)

  •  Systems and Tools Research, Recommendations and Implementation (in stages) to improve the operational systems, processes and policies in support of MLL’s mission
  • Maintain shared drive and digital task management systems for the organization
  • Develop & manage donor database/CRM
  • Expense reconciliation & reimbursements
  • Order office supplies/furniture
  • Develop & maintain shared task management system for office.
  • Calendar and Scheduling: maintain organizational-wide calendar and scheduling process.
  • Support efficient and effective management reporting, information flow and management, business process and organizational planning

II.    Event Management (25%)

  • Lead Operations and Logistics Forecasting and Backward Planning for MLL programs.
  • Lead logistical implementation for MLL events including:
  • Venue site search & selection
  •  Vendor management. This includes search, negotiation of best prices, selection, invoices, andpayments to all vendors (food, beverage, audiovisual, equipment rentals, hotels, airfare, etc.)
  •  Manage travel & accommodations for staff, guests, speakers
  • Event registration and ticketing
  • Prepare, print programs/materials for attendees/speakers
  • Purchase & track event supplies and materials
  • Day-of event production & trouble-shooting
  • Oversee meeting spaces
  • Process reimbursements for attendees/staff/speakers
  • Conduct follow-up tasks from all events/gatherings/programs
  • Maintain and monitor event budget
  • Represent MLL on collective logistics teams with partner organizations

III. Assistant to Director (35%)

  • Calendaring and scheduling as requested.
  • Prepare and send responses to Director’s e-mail inquiries as requested.
  • Manage and book Director’s travel and accommodations.
  •  Take meeting notes & migrate tasks into shared task management system.
  • Assist Director with onboarding new staff. Lead back-end, hiring tasks: Drafting and posting job description(s), reviewing resumes, pre-screening and scheduling interviews.
  •  Prepare memos and agendas for meetings as requested.
  • Assist Director with program-related administrative tasks for events and convenings

IV.   Branding & Communications (10%)

  • Web development/maintenance: coordinate with outside consultant to build out site and then maintain.
  • Social Media - platform selection/roll out and overall strategy and content calendar, day-to-day maintenance & engagement
  • On-line resource library (content development & maintenance)
  • Design of flyers and social media content—and work with outside consultants on design when needed.

R equired Qualifications and Experience

  •  At least 3 years high level administrative experience, ideally in remote workplace environment.
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of MLL.
  • Experience in multi-racial, multi-gendered, multi-cultural, multi-generational settings.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to forecast and plan several months in advance, and adapt plan implementation for multiply projects simultaneously.
  •  Ability to work independently while maintaining close communication with remote teams.
  •  Ability to keep other staff/members on task and “manage-up”.
  • Outgoing, positive energy, professional attitude in communications with members, staff, allies and vendors.
  •  Knowledge of common computer applications: MS Office, Google docs, Dropbox, Mac environment, and Zoom video tele-conferencing systems.
  • Comfort with online work environment and digital filing & communication systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  •  Ability to work out of MLL’s Baltimore office 1-3 days a week. Ability to travel when needed (average 10-15 days per year)
  • Sense of humor, commitment to clear/direct communication, excitement at being in a start-up environment.
  • Desire to be reflective, grow, receive/give constructive feedback and be a constructive force in group settings.

Compensation: The role is an exempt, salaried position with a salary range of $60,000 to $75,000.
