Kid Power inspires youth leadership by promoting academic advancement, physical and emotional wellness, and positive civic engagement in under-served communities throughout the District of Columbia. Kid Power embraces youth voice and believes that every young person can become an informed and engaged advocate for change in their own lives and in their communities.

Kid Power provides four core programs to address youth needs: 1) Daily After-School, 2) 5-week Summer Leadership Academy, 3) In-School Health and Wellness, 4) Alumni and Mentoring Programming for Older Youth. Programs are designed to help youth achieve success in school, meaningful civic engagement, healthy behaviors, and successful transitions into adulthood. The AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator will lead all volunteer recruitment for all core programs.


Core Responsibilities: The AmeriCorps Site Coordinator will provide effective program delivery and community building activities at Kid Power program sites. 

Working with a team of other AmeriCorps members, Kid Power staff, DCPS teachers, and volunteers, he/she/they will work to: ensure program quality delivery and increase student achievement by providing more support to front-line program staff, help create additional program content, help maintain and track program outcome and bench-marking data, strengthen communication and resource sharing at schools, assist in recruiting and retaining additional volunteers and community partners to support small group and mentor instruction, and provide additional resources to partner schools. 

Student Support 

  • Ensures the safety and well-being of all youth participants on site 
  • Oversees youth goal setting and tracking and supports the development of behavioral plans for youth when appropriate 
  • Works with DCPS teachers and aides and Kid Power After School Instructors to ensure high quality Academic Power Hour and enrichment activities 

Staff Support 

  • Models effective classroom management and program implementation for all program staff on site and during trainings 
  • Communicates regularly with supervisors and staff about program quality and specific youth issues 
  • Fills in as an After-School Instructor as needed 
  • Creates program content, as needed 

Program Development, Implementation, and Reporting 

  • Assists Director of Curriculum and Instruction in the development of additional content and activities that align with Kid Power’s developmental and academic objectives and DCPS standards 
  • Presents curriculum at weekly Staff meetings 
  • Monitors the implementation of all Kid Power activities and curriculum and regularly reports back to senior staff 
  • Helps adapt curriculum when appropriate and assists program staff with implementation issues 
  • Helps Senior Program Director and Program Director administer and input student, teacher, and parent evaluations and data, including attendance. 
  • Provides bi-weekly program reports to Program Director 

Logistics 

  • Helps with weekly deliveries of program supplies, curriculum, and food 
  • Attends all pertinent trainings and staff meetings 
  • Communicates regularly with DCPS administration, After-School Coordinators, and teachers to monitor student progress, ensure efficient youth registration, classroom cleanliness, high attendance, and meal provision 
  • Communicates regularly with supervisors and colleagues 
  • Maintains presence at assigned school building, fostering strong relationships with school community. 

Volunteer Recruitment 

  • Works with AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator and Senior Program Director to implement systems for volunteer recruitment and retention for after-school and summer sites. 
  • Builds relationships with neighborhood high schools, community centers, government organizations, etc. and creates a brand-new database for sustainable partnerships 
  • Recruits at least 10 volunteer tutors for academic or enrichment support 
  • Tracks and reports volunteer hours weekly and as needed 


***This position will be performed remotely until DC Public Schools resume in-person classes. Once in-person school day sessions resume, this member will be expected to perform service in-person as well***

Benefits

For a Full-Year Member:

  • $16,600 annual taxable stipend + FICA
  • $50/month travel stipend
  • $150/month towards health insurance
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award which can be used towards student loans and/or to help finance higher education pursuits upon successful completion of service. (2020 amount $6,195, 2021 amount TBD)
  • Student loan forbearance or deferment available.
