Department Summary

The American Immigration Lawyers Association’s (AILA’s) Publications and Online Resources Department administers all content for the association, including the website, daily e-newsletter, print and digital publications, and an online immigration research library. AILA’s Publications and Online Resources Department is comprised of two divisions: Publications and Online Resources.


Position Summary

The Legal Editor works with the Publications Manager and the Director of Publications and Online Resources to produce core publications that will best serve AILA’s membership, while simultaneously generating revenue for the association. Specifically, this position is responsible for editorial, and production processes associated with publication of print and electronic practice resources; working with outside vendors, outside authors, and in-house and contract editorial staff; planning and goal-setting.


Essential Job Functions

-Editorial and Production: Serves as Editor of single-authored books and compilations. The role recruits’ authors, edits book and periodic material while adhering to stated production deadlines. The position will also produce final pages, and review proofs prior to publication. An essential duty is to ensure accuracy of legal content before publication.

-Relationship Management: Manages authors and/or suppliers, and provides ongoing support to authors, ensuring timely delivery of manuscript or other content.

-AILALink and AILA.org Training: Shares responsibility as staff trainer for AILALink (AILA’s electronic research library) and AILA.org (AILA’s website) with other department staff.

-Project Management: Assists Director of Publications and Online Resources and/or the Publications Manager with business goals.


Education and Training

Four-year undergraduate degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field. J.D. degree required

Minimum Job Requirements

Three years’ experience in some combination of legal writing and/or legal practice, or coursework and/or experience in area(s) of immigration law. Legal publishing experience is a plus. Experience must demonstrate: excellent writing and editing skills, the ability to work under pressure, acute attention to detail, and the capacity to manage numerous tasks simultaneously while consistently meeting daily deadlines.
