The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights invites applications for a Case Support Specialist position to be based in Phoenix, Arizona or Harlingen, Texas. The Case Support Specialist will work on cases involving the separation of immigrant children from their parents by U.S. immigration authorities and cases involving vulnerable, unaccompanied immigrant children. 

The Young Center is a children’s rights organization dedicated to promoting the best interests—safety and well-being—of unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in the United States. The immediate focus of the Young Center’s work is to serve as Child Advocate for vulnerable, unaccompanied and separated children. Our role is to identify and advocate for the best interests of children in federal custody, applying federal and state law and long-recognized principles of the best interests of the child. In the last year, we have been appointed as Child Advocate to an increasing number of children who arrived at the U.S. border with their parents but who were separated by immigration authorities; we also continue to work with unaccompanied children who face prolonged custody or separation from family. 

The Case Support Specialist will be responsible for administrative support related to cases where the Young Center is appointed as Child Advocate for separated and unaccompanied children. The Case Support Specialist will review and gather information for all referrals sent to an office for the appointment of a Child Advocate. Once the Young Center is appointed to a case, the Case Support Specialist will be responsible for locating children’s family members; identifying government officials working on the cases; and facilitating regular communication between the child and family member and between the Young Center and government officials. When children are to be released from custody or repatriated to their countries of origin, the Case Support Specialist will coordinate with the child, the family, and government and consular officials to ensure everyone has the information necessary to ensure the child’s safety post-release. The Case Support Specialist will also assist with gathering and reporting data on our work on these cases; help to submit recommendations for immigration court or other agencies; and assist with other administrative casework.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. The Case Support Specialist’s primary responsibilities will be:

  • Review all referrals for appointment of Child Advocate (from government officials, attorneys, others) and gather any missing information
  • Identify and locate child’s parents or other family members in the United States or in home country
  • Develop contact information for all government stakeholders in a case (for example, a parent’s deportation officer, a child’s case manager) and compile the information in the child’s file
  • Schedule and facilitate communication between children and parents and between Young Center advocates, children and stakeholders
  • Review documentation from child’s case, including the ORR case file to identify and flag documents for review by supervising staff; gather missing documentation relevant to child’s case 
  • Identify mental health experts and other professionals whose expertise may be necessary in advocating for the child’s best interests and arrange logistics for meetings, consultations or evaluations
  • Identify potential services for the child upon reunification or release from custody, in coordination with supervising staff
  • Identify potential services in child’s country of origin for the child upon repatriation, in coordination with supervising staff
  • Enter information into the Young Center case management system
  • Routinely check information on government hotline and update case management spreadsheet
  • Prepare Young Center recommendations for electronic or in-person filing with government officials and immigration courts
  • Other responsibilities as assigned


  • Undergraduate Degree
  • Fluency in Spanish 


  • Experience working with children or families, or in support of immigrant communities
  • Tenacity in pursuing information and following up when requests are unanswered
  • Oral communication that conveys professionalism, expertise and empathy
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and documentation skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and to balance multiple time-sensitive tasks
  • Passion and optimism for the issues affecting immigrant children and their families
