Overview: The mission of La Colaborativa is to empower and enhance the social and economic health of the communities we serve, Chelsea, East Boston, Everett, Lynn, Malden and Revere; and to hold institutional decision makers accountable to the community. We implement a collection of community initiatives – developed and led by residents – to address persistent issues of inequity, which negatively impact the well-being of the residents in the communities we serve, particularly those most vulnerable among us such as children, youth, immigrants, and refugees. Our initiatives meet the basic needs of the residents, foster leadership and citizenship among newcomers, develop the next generation of leaders, respond effectively to crises, and create systemic change that increases equity and justice for years to come.  

 

La Colaborativa has a 30+ year history of building relationships with historically marginalized groups, engaging them civically through outreach and community education, and mobilizing them to have their voices heard and effect systemic change. We are a trusted pillar of the immigrant and Latinx communities and we have systems and structures in place to support our community to identify and address the social and economic justice issues impacting their lives. The importance of civic engagement and participation in decision-making processes is a cornerstone of our mission and day-to-day work in the communities we serve. It is highlighted in everything we do throughout the year. 

 

General Description of Position:  

The ideal candidate is an experienced community organizer and campaigner who is also a coalition-builder and strategist and who believes deeply in the importance of building community leadership, capacity and power for working Latinx people. The Workers Center Organizer will be responsible for mapping out and executing a comprehensive strategic campaign plan for assigned areas that is rooted in holistic organizing and centered around eradicating oppressive, harmful and unsafe workplaces for Latinx people. S/he will be responsible for doing all of this in collaboration with staff, member leaders, leadership of current Latinx worker centers as well as allies. The ideal candidate must be able to organize and effectively communicate at all levels-with our constituencies as well as established community leaders and policy experts. 

 

Key Areas of Responsibilities:  

  • Build a large base of members who participat3e in demanding changes from their employers and creating the political climate that tallows for those changes to be adopted 
  • Identify hot organizing issues that workers want to address in their region. Organize direct actions, events and other tactics to address said issues and bring about change 
  • Develops and executes field and political strategy to end worker structural racism 
  • Acts as a spokesperson with allied organizations, community groups and media  
  • Coordinates the development of a member organizing committee 
  • Ensures the tracking, reporting and analysis on all membership activity in her/his purview 
  • Manages departmental budgets, allocates resources effectively and plans and implements program activities as appropriate 
  • Coordinate campaign messaging, traditional media work, mass communications, and digital organizing with LC’s communications department 
  • Regularly communicate the campaign’s progress to our members, staff and partners 
  • Work with the exiting database to track members, participation and progress towards achieving success 
  • Work with partner to move the campaign forward. This may include joint strategy meetings, joint actions or other events, relationship building, etc. 
  • Enhance our reputation and brand, and promote our values 
  • Other duties as required 

 

Supervision Received: 

  • Works under the supervision of the Director of Organizing. 

Qualifications:  

  • At least 3 years of organizing experience running campaigns, 1 year political and policy experience preferred 
  • Demonstrated experience leading successful mobilizing, organizing and recruitment drives 
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills 
  • Relentless drive, tenacity and a willingness to advance our mission and values, dedicated to Latinx people, workers' rights and social justice 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds 
  • Comfortable with nontraditional routes to mobilizing, organizing and leadership development 
  • Experience with organizing databases 
  • Ability to lead and work with a team as well as having proven success working independently 
  • Digital organizing experience a plus 
  • Ability to track and report effectiveness of strategy and growth 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated focus on policy analysis, outreach and targeted communications 
  • Knowledge of Latinx workers, the workplace and racial justice issues 
  • Willingness to work long and often irregular hours including evenings and weekends 
  • Adept a leading and motivating workers in necessary struggles 
  • Required to have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and a working automobile 
  • Strong planning, organizational and independent judgement skills 
  • Skilled in communication, collaboration and teamwork 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Assist with the planning, monitoring and evaluation of activities.
