Overview: Partner for Surgery (PfS) and Compañero para Cirugía (CpC) are sister organizations working towards the same goal: bringing life-changing surgical care to the most vulnerable rural Guatemalans. To achieve this mission, we are seeking a Development Director to be based in Guatemala where our mission is delivered. The successful candidate will focus on fundraising in the US and other countries, where most of the donors supporting the work of PfS and CpC are located. This is an ideal position for someone looking for an exciting career in international development who has a passion for helping others.

Job Summary: Reporting to and in partnership with CpC’s Executive Director, the Development Director plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates all development activities in the following areas to ensure that CpC has adequate funds to thrive: institutional fundraising; individual donor cultivation, external communications, and special events, with a focus on the United States donor base.

Responsibilities:

  1. In collaboration with the Executive Director and the Resource Development Committee of Partner for Surgery’s Board of Directors, design and implement a Development strategy with annual income targets, including individual donor cultivation and communications strategies, and establish annual revenue targets and other related goals.
  2. Manage the Development team volunteers or staff, providing leadership and support.
  3. In conjunction with the Resource Development Committee, develop and manage Board fundraising capacity in the US.
  4. Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential US institutional (foundation, government, corporate) and individual funders.
  5. Manage all US-based institutional fundraising efforts, including by developing and submitting proposals, reports, and other necessary information to institutional funders.
  6. Design and implement an individual donor cultivation strategy to develop and grow CpC’s individual donor base in the US.
  7. Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy covering PfS’s website, social media, and blog; documentary outreach; e-mail appeals; print pieces (newsletters, annual report, brochures); and, other resource materials (presentations, fact sheets, program overviews, etc.).
  8. Work effectively with other Guatemala-based Board members staff and volunteers to identify current funding requirements and to secure source material.

Essential Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of professional fundraising experience in the US.
  • Fluent written and spoken English and intermediate Spanish (though fluency is preferred)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  • Must be a highly motivated team player who is detail-orientated, organized, and who can work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact effectively with donors, public audiences, peers, and supervisors.
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities.
  • Strong computer skills including: MS Word, Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint (Experience using Adobe Suite preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 year commitment.
  • Must have a strong enthusiasm and drive to support the mission, vision and principles of PfS and CpC.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience in health issues and/or international relief and development.
  • Thorough understanding of all components of a diversified funding base.
  • Experience using database and CRM programs (Network for Good experience a plus), communications software, and/or website content management programs.
  • Graphic design/ publishing or layout computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to create strong, positive relationships with individual donors, volunteers, businesses, faith communities, service groups, and non-profit agencies.
  • Experience in event planning.
  • Experience working in a multicultural environment/ developing country.
