Scope of Position of Executive Director

The Building Goodness Foundation (BGF) Executive Director provides administrative and programmatic oversight and management, while executing the strategic vision of the Board of Directors. Key attributes include operations management, strong fundraising skills, engagement with partners and the communities we serve, knowledge and relation to the building industry and responsibility to lead BGF to enduring success. 

Prerequisite General Skills

  • Four-year college degree
  • At least 5-7 years of nonprofit leadership experience
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and G Suite
  • Preference for working in a collaborative, team environment
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Optimistic and resilient personality with a sense of humor

  • Experience with international development work and cross-cultural services
  • Experience working with design and construction industry professionals

  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends
  • Ability to travel internationally as needed; comfort in international developing world settings
  • Knowledge of Spanish, Creole, French beneficial but not required


The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing and ensuring excellence in all aspects of BGF operations, while infusing the organization’s vision and core values in a holistic manner and energizing all partners, staff, volunteers, and donors around the organization’s mission.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Board Relations and Organizational Strategy

  • Ensure that BGF mission, vision, and core values are central to all organizational planning and activities
  • Collaborate with the Board to ensure the overall governance and fiscal health of the organization
  • Support the Board in strategic planning, cultivation and training of new board members, and ensuring compliance with bylaws and policies
  • Collaborate with Board leadership on development of meeting agendas
  • Ensure that volunteers are provided with a meaningful experience that enhances organizational capacity and mission

Operational and Financial Management

  • Oversee annual budget process, in collaboration with the Administrative Director and in partnership with the Board
  • Effectively manage operations within the approved budget
  • Coordinate the Management Team, comprised of the Administrative Director, Development Director, and Projects Director
  • Manage and coach the Administrative Director, Development Director, and Projects Director to ensure individual and collective excellence in the performance of their assigned responsibilities
  • Conduct weekly staff meeting for BGF staff and individual meetings with supervisor and supervisees
  • Perform annual performance evaluations for all direct reports
  • Ensure a healthy and sustainable organizational culture for all employees

Development and Project Funding

  • Oversee the development and implementation of a fundraising program in collaboration with the Development Director and partner organizations
  • Ensure complementary strategies for core and project revenue fundraising activities
  • Identify and pursue appropriate revenue sources outside of Charlottesville
  • Support grant writing, special events, and the ongoing cultivation of individuals, community foundations, and corporate donors
  • Create and manage strong relationships with existing and potential BGF partners in support of programming goals and organizational mission, inclusive of memorandums of understanding
  • Coach partners in design and implementation of capital campaign and fundraise in collaboration
  • Oversee the effective assessment of programming outcomes through data collection to ensure that future programming decisions are thoughtful and rooted in qualitative and quantitative analysis

External Relations

  • Function as the primary ambassador of the organization, effectively communicating the BGF mission, vision, and core values to the community at large and key stakeholders
  • Cultivate productive relationships with the nonprofit and philanthropic communities, while representing BGF in key associations and construction industry
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the BGF Board President
