The Covid pandemic is having a dire impact on students, causing many to experience new levels of trauma, social-emotional challenges and significant learning loss.  While all children have been disconnected from schools, educators and their peers, low-income children of color have disparately impacted with twice the learning loss (12-16 months compared to 5-9 months) than their more affluent peers and have often suffered more material deprivation of food and housing insecurity.  This unprecedented moment also offers the unique opportunity to rebuild and reimagine.  SchoolTalk sees this moment as one to spread our vision of creating more inclusive and restorative school environments for all children, especially those with learning differences and who have experienced more trauma this year.   To reconnect children at this time, schools need to be places of inclusion and trust and SchoolTalk is uniquely positioned to lead this effort.  


About SchoolTalk

Founded in 2008, SchoolTalk, Inc. is a District of Columbia (DC)-based nonprofit whose goal is to help youth with disabilities and their peers thrive in school and achieve fulfilling post-secondary outcomes by creating spaces that emphasize self-determination, community-building and inclusion.  SchoolTalk supports the DC education community in collaboratively addressing complex challenges and creating practical solutions for assisting youth of all abilities achieve success. SchoolTalk’s programs actively work to improve postsecondary outcomes for youth through both proactive initiatives such as youth leadership and mentoring, skill-building, and workforce development; and direct intervention to resolve issues in productive ways, such as mediation and restorative justice. SchoolTalk has two key program areas: Inclusive Education and Restorative Justice.


Position Summary

SchoolTalk is seeking a Development and Partnership Manager to support organizational growth and sustainability as well as our growing network of partners and stakeholders. SchoolTalk has an imperative to advance and accelerate our development, marketing, communication and external relations functions as we respond to the new realities of COVID-19 and implement our new 5-year strategic plan completed in March 2020. In addition to rolling out the new strategic plan, we are adapting to provide many of our programs online, including workshops/trainings for adults and interactive workshops with students.  Historically, SchoolTalk has received the majority of its revenue through DC government contracts. This position will support the strategic vision of the organization to diversify its funding streams by connecting SchoolTalk programs and projects with partnerships and funding opportunities to include individual and corporate giving, foundation and other grants, new earned revenue business opportunities within DC, regionally and nationally.  


This position will play a central role in development and partnerships, primarily through creating a development and outreach strategy and implementing and managing the associated systems, outreach, and writing.   Actively collaborating with other organizations has been a vital component of SchoolTalk’s strategy for maximizing our impact. This position would support SchoolTalk staff and managers in developing and maintaining these partnerships.  The Development and Partnership Coordinator works directly with and reports to the Executive Director.

Manager Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development of fundraising and external partnership outreach strategies, and monitor progress against these strategies on an ongoing basis.
  • Play key role in identifying, researching and cultivating new donors and partners.
  • Draft, prepare full complement of compelling materials and submit high-quality proposals for new grants, including responding to government RFPs within deadlines. 
  • Steward donors and partners by planning and executing engagement plans, drafting compelling materials, and engaging partners in events, convenings, and experiences that connect them to our mission and our work.
  • Create content and partner with Communications Manager to provide regular updates for ongoing outreach and any required collateral to be sent to government, foundation and corporate officers (e.g., newsletters, major reports, IRS forms, etc.) 
  • Support our Board of Directors by planning and executing logistics, materials, talking points and preparation for their support in development.
  • Lead our (CRM) system, ensuring accurate data inputting and supporting the team in its use in communicating with outside stakeholders.  Maintain current records and actions in partnership and donor database, including grant tracking and reporting, receipting, submission calendar, payment schedule, metrics and revenue reports. 
  • Manage creation and writing of our annual report, working with team to develop content and message.
  • Prepare Executive Director for development meetings and events, including meetings and other outreach efforts.  Plan strategic agendas, brief on donors and partners.
  • Other development and external partnership related tasks assigned by Executive Director.

  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage complex tasks, involving multiple parties, to deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent technical skills, including fluency with Microsoft SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. 
  • Self-directed, self-starter with a track record of successfully managing multiple priorities and projects.
  • Communication skills and personal presence necessary to effectively interact with senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Humble and responsive to feedback, with capacity to learn quickly and continuously. 

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 year years of work experience. Non-profit fundraising and communications experience highly valued with K-12 public education experience and graduate of DC public charter or district an awesome bonus. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Bilingual Spanish speaker highly desired, but not required.

Salary

$70,000 - $75,000
