Save The Bay is the largest regional organization working to protect and restore San Francisco Bay for people and wildlife. We protect the Bay from pollution and climate change, and restore crucial shoreline habitat for endangered species and flood protection. Since 1961, our effective advocacy has stopped massive landfill from destroying the Bay, expanded the nation’s largest urban wildlife refuge, reduced trash flowing to the Bay, created $500 million public fund to accelerate marsh restoration, and much more. We annually enlist 5,000 volunteers in hands-on habitat restoration, educate thousands of students about Bay science and stewardship, and lead the region’s annual celebration of Bay Day. Our Oakland-based staff of 30 mobilizes supporters and partners throughout the Bay Area. Our 501c4 affiliate, Save The Bay Action Fund, engages in political and electoral activity.

About the Position:

The Senior Communications Manager works to grow Save The Bay’s visibility reach and influence through effective marketing and advocacy campaigns in support of our Strategic Plan 2020 objectives. S/he is a skilled communicator that enjoys managing people and projects to success in a fast-paced, mission-driven office environment. 

The position supervises a three-person team and must possess superior communication and technical skills in the areas of writing, digital communications and fundraising, public relations, events and outreach, and social media. S/he reports to the Chief Development Officer and works directly with the Executive Director and program staff on public relations and rapid response communications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic communications and marketing plans that advance Save The Bay Strategic Plan initiatives and programs by boosting awareness, inspiring action for impact, and optimizing revenue.
  • Develop organizational positioning, brand, style, and persuasive messages that move key audiences; champion the brand in all organizational communications with message clarity and consistency.
  • Create partnerships and high-profile marketing opportunities that increase the organization’s visibility, enhance its profile, and attract new revenue, including through Bay Day, the annual region-wide celebration of San Francisco Bay.
  • Support organization-wide efforts to build and mobilize a regional constituency for the Bay to engage in active advocacy, volunteer on the shoreline, and contribute financially to Save The Bay. Coordinate directly and routinely with program staff to advance their communication goals.
  • Supervise and mentor communications staff, consultants and vendors. In conjunction with the Chief Development Officer, develop and manage annual communications budget and work plan; evaluate and assess effectiveness of communication strategies and activities and implement needed changes.
  • In conjunction with Chief Development Officer, oversee all digital marketing and fundraising programs for Save The Bay and Save The Bay Action Fund. 


  • 7+ years of experience in communications roles and 2+ years of direct management experience
  • Strong track record crafting and executing successful strategic communications and creative marketing campaigns; employing powerful story-telling to build support among targeted audiences for ambitious program outcomes; and support for revenue growth strategies
  • Success coaching high performance individuals, supervising employees to set and accomplish ambitious objectives together
  • Exceptional writing, editing and speaking skills; able to synthesize complex concepts into concise and compelling messages, and exercise message discipline throughout an organization; able to produce and pitch presentations that can inspire community action, secure new business opportunities, and solicit funding
  • Demonstrated experience managing online engagement through data-driven strategies, building applying best practices in social media and adapting to changing technologies and platforms
  • Superior PowerPoint and Microsoft Office Suite skills required.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce and Pardot, or equivalent CRM/email platform experience required.
  • Understanding of Website design and layout, technical skills in website management, graphic design, and content planning preferred.
  • Experience with and commitment to creating positive change through direct advocacy and political action; prior experience working for an environmental NGO is not required.
  • Excellent project-management and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple issue campaigns, objectives and staff simultaneously on a non-profit budget
  • Enthusiasm for Save The Bay’s mission and programs; a sense of humor and a collegial, collaborative approach; entrepreneurial, nimble and willing to hustle for opportunities
