The training team at The Management Center is growing! We are now a $5 million, 20-person operation, training many of the social justice, educational equity, and “resistance” organizations at the forefront of tackling our country’s most pressing problems, and we've grown from reaching 300 people in 2010 to over 9,000 in 2018. We are looking for an outstanding and experienced manager to help lead the team to even more growth and impact in the years ahead.


The training team at The Management Center is now a $5 million, 20 person operation, training many of the social justice, educational equity, and “resistance” organizations at the forefront of tackling our country’s most pressing problems -- and we need an outstanding manager and leader to serve as the deputy director of the team! Over the past seven years the scope of our training work has increased tremendously, growing from reaching 300 people in 2010 to over 9,000 in 2018, and we are now seeking a talented senior manager to help lead the team to even more growth and impact in the years to come. 


Who We Are 

Our mission at The Management Center is to help social change leaders build and run more effective organizations so they can deliver great results. Founded in 2006, we have helped shape the practices of hundreds of influential organizations and thousands of individual managers, with a particular focus on leading progressive organizations working for social change. Our clients work on issues – like promoting immigration reform, fighting for racial, economic and gender justice, advocating for educational equity, and protecting voting rights – where they face an inherently uphill battle and so must fight more effectively than their opponents if they are going to win. We aim to help them do that by making their organizations as effective as possible, by providing coaching, training, and publications for the broader field.


We work hard to deliver services that produce extremely high levels of client satisfaction, which has enabled us to grow by word of mouth. As a result, our training arm has become a high-powered operation: in just the last 4 years, we have more than quintupled our reach! Yet we still have more demand than we can serve, and, particularly given the current climate in our country, we are more committed than ever to doing what it takes to reach as many organizations as possible. What You’ll Do

Your overall job will be to directly manage trainers on the team, coaching and improving their performance towards ambitious goals around client satisfaction, revenue, and impact of our trainings. You will help to build a highly aligned, racially diverse, talented team to continue delivering on those goals into the future. 


More specifically, you will do things like: 


  • Manage a portion of the growing team of full-time and adjunct (part-time) trainers;
  • Provide leadership and coordination of ongoing trainer development, both around training content (for example, helping develop answers to challenging questions) and their broader skills as trainers; 
  • Conduct a small number of trainings yourself (1-2 per quarter) to “stay in the game” and deeply understand trainers’ experience in delivering high quality training; 
  • Collaborate with the team lead to identify, court, and hire new trainers to join our team and expand our capacity; and
  • Tackle performance issues as they arise in a straightforward, thoughtful manner.


You will report to the head of the training team, Megan Hanson.


Who You Are

We’re looking for an outstanding and experienced manager – someone who is interpersonally and culturally competent, extraordinarily results-oriented, and able to manage effectively in complexity. More specifically, to be successful in this job, you will excel in most or all of the following:


  • Managing a high-performing team to results– You are highly results-oriented, with a track record of successfully managing a complex team, and a demonstrated ability to set and manage to aggressive goals, including delegating real ownership of work to team members. 
  •  Coaching of trainers– You can sit in on a staff member’s training and put your finger on the one or two things that would most helpfully move that trainer forward, then provide coaching to the trainer so that they take and implement your advice. You can also give trainers powerful insights into the most challenging situations that arise during trainings, and can plan and execute professional development to grow trainer skills over time.
  • Race and identity competency– You have experience working in teams led by people of color or indigenous people, or in racially diverse teams, and creating equitable and inclusive environments. You are able to build strong, trusting relationships across a diverse team, and proactively spot (with deep insight and a practical lens) places where identity, equity, and power intersect with management.
  • Spotting and developing talent–You are able to separate the “pretty good” from the “very good” in the hiring process. You hold team members to a high bar and give direct, insightful feedback and work with team members to develop their strengths. 
  • Organizational leadership and perspective– You understand and can contribute to navigating the many complexities of making decisions at the senior level. You are able to engage with and remain aligned with other decision-makers as needed, even when you might have chosen a different path. 


Prior experience as a trainer is not required, but you need to be able to distinguish between a good training and an excellent training, and to recruit and develop talented staff to deliver excellent trainings, and deliver some trainings yourself. Because our clients and our staff come from a wide range of backgrounds, you also need to be able to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and bring a deep commitment to advancing these values.Prior experience in the progressive advocacy, educational equity, or broader nonprofit arenas is a plus, but not a requirement. We like to think of our culture as one that combines excellence with heart, and we’re looking for people who can help us build on that culture.

The position is full-time and ideally based in Washington, DC. For the ideal candidate living elsewhere but willing to travel to DC frequently, we would consider a different location. Either way, some amount of travel outside of DC will be required (perhaps one to two times a month on average to see trainings around the country). 


Salary will be between $120,000 to $160,000, with exact salary depending on experience and new staff rarely starting at the top of the range. We offer very good benefits and an additional 5% employer contribution to your retirement fund.
