StartOut is the leading national non-profit focused on supporting LGBTQ entrepreneurs and is geared up for extensive expansion. Our mission is to increase the number, diversity, and impact of LGBTQ+ founders and amplify their stories to drive the economic empowerment of the community.
If you have what it takes, we want you to be responsible for managing one of our premier projects, the groundbreaking StartOut Pride Economic Impact Index (SPEII). This is a position that requires a blend of positivity, professionalism, stellar communication, a great ability to manage details, as well as a basic understanding of research and the landscape of indexes. Based in our San Francisco or New York office, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, and working in a small driven team, you will be in charge of the following:
● Management (10%):
o Assure the successful utilization and further advancement of the SPEII program, and
ensure meeting all KPI’s associated with the program. These KPIs are determined annually.
o Report on KPI’s, weekly to the StartOut team, and periodically to sponsors. Identify and
address shortcomings, if applicable.
o Support the executive and development directors in reporting to and securing further
● Engagement (40%):
o Promote the usage of the SPEII across a wide spectrum of potential users.
o Support users with customer service and general phone and email support.
o Provide additional information to users when appropriate to maximize the value of the
o Identify further use cases with third parties, and engage with them to get their support.
● Marketing (30%):
o Collaborate with the StartOut team on continuously marketing the SPEII on social media, in the press, and at select conferences.
o Monitor SPEII usage and generate opportunities to market the use of the SPEII by third
parties, on social media and other channels.
o Explore opportunities to promote new findings on a regular basis to keep the SPEII in the
press, on social media and other channels.
● Next versions (10%):
o Support the science team with feature requests based on customer experience.
o Support the science team with new data sources and data feeds, as they arise.
o Collaborate with third parties to secure further program, policy, and other data sources.
● Monetization (10%):
o Work with the science team to explore providing one-off program or policy analyses.
o Explore paid consulting opportunities to address interventions based on SPEII findings.
o Explore and manage third party consulting companies for the above.
You are looking for an opportunity to take a key position in an entrepreneurial atmosphere and demonstrate your ability to take initiative and manage diverse tasks. On the spectrum of “doer” to “planner” – you lean towards being a “doer.” You are highly detail oriented, friendly, able to set priorities, passionate, innovative, enterprising, outcome-driven, close to or part of the LGBTQ community, and flexible to work in an often-changing environment. You are excellent at building relationships, have a high level of professionalism, and genuinely care about helping LGBTQ entrepreneurs.
● 5+ years project management.
● An exceptional attention to detail.
● Excellent professional communication skills.
● Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting and follow through on your responsibilities.
● A deep sense of commitment, ownership, and pride in your work.
● Organized and flexible. Capable of juggling different kinds of work and shifting priorities, without much supervision.
● Experience with or keen demonstrated interest in research or applied research projects, ideally LGBTQ related.
● Preferred - general knowledge of startups and entrepreneurship
● A passion for the power of entrepreneurship, combined with a keen interest in LGBTQ issues.
● Demonstrated interest in working in a non-profit environment.
