The Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (LACLJ) is currently recruiting for a passionate advocate to provide family law legal services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The position may be for a Staff Attorney or Senior Attorney based on the successful applicant’s level of experience and expertise. Either position will carry a full caseload and report to LACLJ’s Supervising Family Law Attorney. The Senior Attorney position offers additional leadership opportunities and greater autonomy in casework. This position is ideal for a passionate advocate interested in joining an agency dedicated to pursuing safety, stability and justice for survivors and immigrants.

Essential Functions: 

  • Provide legal advice and representation to survivors of domestic and sexual violence primarily in family law matters, including custody, dissolution, and restraining orders cases. Engage in all levels of legal services from advice and counsel to trial and appellate advocacy.
  • Work with Masters in Social Work (MSW) interns in the provision of holistic services to clients, including referrals for non-legal services, accompaniment and safety planning.
  • Engage in community education and outreach by conducting presentations for community members and partners as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate case file maintenance, including electronic records.

Additional Senior Attorney Functions:

  • Provide mentorship to staff and pro bono attorneys and co-counsel cases as needed.
  • Support LACLJ partnerships by providing technical assistance or training to other service providers and participating in networks, task forces or coalitions as needed.
  • Support management team in ensuring best practices related to case management practices and other areas of service delivery.


  • Demonstrated passion for working with survivor and immigrant populations.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish required.
  •  At least 3 years of legal experience and demonstrated knowledge of family law for staff attorney applicants; at least 7 years of legal experience with expertise in family law for senior attorney applicants.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide trauma-informed services; experience working with trauma survivors strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational and case management skills.
  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and membership in good standing with the California Bar.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Work will be performed in an office setting at a work station.
  • Incumbent will be required to concentrate on tasks while facing distractions and will be required to attend meetings
  • Use of office machines such as computers, photocopiers, scanners and telephones is a regular part of this position.

About the Organization:  Founded in 1973, the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (LACLJ) pursues safety, stability and justice for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Primary areas of practice include family and immigration law. The agency implements a trauma-informed and holistic service model. Holistic services are provided through LACLJ’s Community Care Advocacy Program, which is staffed by a LCSW and a team of Masters in Social Work (MSW) interns. The agency’s mission is to fight for the rights of vulnerable families and advocate for a more just legal system.
