2020 Access Fund - Jeep Conservation Team

The Access Fund-Jeep Conservation Team program continues to meet the growing demand for climbing area stewardship and sustainability, while providing climbing communities and land managers with professionals well-equipped to fulfill complex scopes. Access Fund’s three-team model; CT National, CT East & CT West will continue into 2020, servicing communities across the US. Access Fund is currently hiring to fill its Conservation Teams for 2020, where each crew is comprised of two climbing conservation specialists.

Conservation Team members must possess a passion for climbing and travel, proven trail-building skills, conservation and stewardship education expertise, excellent communication skills, volunteer coordination experience and exceptional team compatibility. Only pre-paired teams will be considered; the Access Fund will not place individuals in a team. The Team will be selected for their ability to inspire the climbing community and promote the mission and values of the Access Fund while creating sustainable climbing resources. The 2020 Conservation Team program will begin on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, teams will be on the road visiting climbing areas throughout the U.S. through December 4, 2020.

Conservation Team members are expected to lead and inspire climbing area stewardship activities throughout the United States. Teams assess climbing area conservation needs and work with local climbing organizations (LCOs), land managers and owners, volunteers and Conservation Crews to address those needs. The Conservation Teams provide training on climbing stewardship best practices; host Adopt a Crag events; construct sustainable climbing

areas; and connect the climbing community with the Access Fund at gyms, festivals, and other events and manage project operations in the field. Regional teams will be dispatched to specific, long-term projects that encompass a host models in completing large-scale initiatives, including

overseeing Conservation Corps programs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform highly technical trail and infrastructure projects at climbing areas in a variety of environments, landscapes and climates.
  • Safely work in a pair to efficiently complete climbing infrastructure projects to the highest standard.
  • Recruit, lead, and organize regular volunteer trail work projects (Adopt a Crag events) involving LCOs, local climbers, youth teams, other user groups, and land managers/owners.
  • Manage on-the-ground expectations and additional crew resources in technical and high quality experiences.
  • Assess the conservation needs of climbing areas, prepare stewardship projects, and make recommendations for long-term stewardship objectives.
  • Engage in climbing resource management discussions with climbers and land management personnel. Meet with LCOs and land managers to share trail-building expertise, design and construct new trails, as well as maintain and restore existing trails.
  • Represent the Access Fund at gyms, festivals, and events to educate the general public on issues facing the climbing community and promote membership and the work of the Access Fund.
  • Create and submit stories, photos, and videos for the Access Fund website, blog, Vertical Times, social media, and e-news.
  • Communicate regularly with local volunteers, LCOs, area partners, and event hosts.
  • Communicate regularly with staff at Access Fund headquarters.
  • Represent the Access Fund, the Conservation Team program, the sport of climbing, and program sponsors in a positive, professional manner at all times.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience in trail design, construction, and maintenance practices and techniques.
  • Passion for people, climbing, education, and stewardship.
  • A very strong relationship with your partner and the ability to spend a great deal of time with each other, in close quarters, and through challenging conditions.
  • Experience working with and motivating volunteers and partners.
  • A sense of adventure and a positive attitude.
  • Extreme flexibility, adaptability, and creativity.
  • Proactive problem solving.
  • Strong skills in time and task management, scheduling, and balancing work/life.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to be diplomatic, calm, and thoughtful in contentious situations.
  • Computer savvy (proficient with Word & Excel, photo/video editing, internet and email, etc.)
