Summer Search Bay Area is seeking a College Access Coordinator (CAC) to guide and advise Summer Searchers through the college application process. Our community is spread across the entire Bay Area region, and this position will most likely support students from Richmond, Hayward and San Jose. The CAC will support students through the college going process including assessing academic progress and college readiness, advising on best-fit college choices, guiding students through college applications and the financial aid process, and supporting a successful transition to college life. In addition to college advising, this hire will also support students in other post-secondary pathways such as enrichment programs and employment. This is a great next step for a college advisor or counselor to join a collaborative and dedicated team, as well as to contribute to closing the opportunity gap for thousands of low-income youth nationwide.

Specifically, the College Access Coordinator will:

  • Provide holistic, 1-1 individualized post-secondary advising to a caseload of approximately 55-70 high school students on an annual basis, developing and implementing plans that are specific to each student’s needs and strengths. During the summer season, the number of students will be closer to 120 students.
  • Prepare and deliver college and financial aid workshops to ensure students, families and staff are educated and current about college application and financial aid processes, and college deadlines for tests, scholarships, and matriculation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the High School and College Success programs to identify and address how to best support each student towards post-secondary success.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and refinement of the College Access program through collaborating with regional and National office staff, as well as participate in trainings in the field of college access/success, particularly for first-generation, low-income students.
  • Operate with an awareness of challenges commonly faced by first-generation and/or low-income students, bringing sensitivity, humility, and understanding to all interactions with students and their families.
  • Consistently utilize Salesforce database to track key data and monitor progress towards multiple post-secondary goals including points of service entries.

College Access Coordinators exemplify curiosity, empathy, teamwork, flexibility, critical consciousness, and a commitment to learning. Specifically, strong candidates will bring:

  • PASSION FOR WORKING WITH YOUTH: A commitment to building long-term, holistic, individualized relationships with each student to support them in their journey through high school and beyond.
  • RELATED EXPERIENCE: At least 2 years of professional experience in college access, admissions, success, or a related field. Working with student populations served by Summer Search (e.g. low-income families, students of color, LGBTQIA+, English Language Learners, and diverse religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds) is ideal.
  • COLLEGE KNOWLEDGE: Demonstrated knowledge of California college admission process, financial aid, scholarships and grants, and college admissions testing. Knowledge of liberal arts colleges, the common application, and the 2-year college track. Knowledge of the college process for undocumented students is strongly desire
  • COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE: Understanding of systems of oppression, such as: white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, and more, which target and disproportionately impact communities of color. Historical context of privilege and power in America; combined with ongoing personal work, sensitivity, directness, and humility in engaging youth around these topics.
  • PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITY: Personal responsibility for work quality and results; excellent organizational skills to juggle multiple projects and at times, unplanned requests.
  • SELF-AWARENESS AND REFLECTION: The ability to recognize and reflect upon one’s emotions, thoughts, values, experience, and identities, and demonstrate an understanding of how they influence and impact others
  • TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION: Flexibility and an eager team player who is excited to collaborate with colleagues and participate in an authentic, feedback-driven office culture.
  • DATA SKILLS: Proficiency in detailed data tracking and management; experience using Salesforce or a similar database is a plus.

Work hours are Mon-Fri 10am-6pm with occasional weekend and evening special events. Work location is the Summer Search office in Oakland. Travel to partner high schools and other locations for student meetings and events will be required as well, usually a few times each month.
