Open House New York seeks an emerging curator, writer, or urban thinker to serve as Program Director. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Director works with a wide network of individuals to conceptualize and organize all of OHNY’s programs, including the annual Open House New York Weekend and year-round tours and talks. The Program Director will have 7+ years experience in organizing cultural programming–such as exhibitions, lectures, tours, publications, or other formats–with some focus on architecture, design, or urbanism. The position is an ideal platform for an emerging professional to explore themes and issues around the cultural, social, economic, and environmental future of cities in general and New York in particular. As part of a small staff, the successful candidate will be a self-directed person who thinks insightfully, is detail oriented, and able to problem-solve and effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously. This is a unique opportunity to work behind-the-scenes at a fast paced non-profit that has unparalleled access to New York City.
Primary responsibilities include:
•Lead organizer and event director for the annual OHNY Weekend, the annual architecture festival held each October that opens up hundreds of sites around New York City. Tasks will include overseeing all aspects of the event including but not limited to:
-Site and program development, in collaboration with staff, board, and committees
-Communications, including editing and production of web and print collateral
-Management of temporary staff to coordinate logistics and 1000+ volunteers
-Primary contact for 250+ sites to coordinate event participation
•Work with Executive Director to conceptualize and implement year-round programs, a schedule of 30-40 public programs and tours that explore architecture, planning and development in New York
•Work as a team with OHNY staff on projects, programs, events management
•Maintain effective and active communication with OHNY’s board and committees
•Assist Executive Director with select grant writing and management
•Write articles for e-newsletters, blogs, and other communications platforms
Experience and Qualifications
•7+ years experience in cultural programming
•Demonstrated knowledge of architecture, urban studies, city planning, community development, or a related discipline
•Must be detail oriented
•Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work independently
•Strong written and verbal communication skills
•Experience with print & electronic research
•Fluency with Adobe CreativeSuite (InDesign, Photoshop)
