Description

Since 1987, NRI has been the only national organization working with state agencies, the Federal Government, state psychiatric hospitals, and other entities to define, collect, and analyze data on public behavioral health systems.

NRI is currently seeking a Behavioral Health Research Associate who performs research involving the organization, funding, operation, services, policies, statutes, staffing and the consumers of State Mental Health Agencies (SMHAs) and providers; drafts written reports or develops research products as needed; and communicates with staff at SMHAs, partner organizations, and Federal agencies. This position provides the candidate the opportunity to develop experience of systems research and policy in the context of the public behavioral health system.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:      
  • Participates as a team member in designing and carrying out research and/or development projects.      
  • Takes a lead in communications with staff from SMHAs and partner organizations in data collection and scheduling of research activities.·        
  • Synthesizes literature related to the organization, financing, and delivery of mental health services for use in research and/or development projects, or for dissemination.         
  • Serves as a liaison with individual pilot, research, or development sites/states in multi-site projects to provide technical assistance or training to ensure sites' ability to adhere to project protocols.       
  • Develops procedures, forms, and schedules for data collection; and collects data through interviews or other data sources. Monitors survey completion and prompts non-responders for optimal response rate.         
  • Writes reports of literature reviews or research results; and/or develops written products. Excellent technical writing skills required.         
  • Assists in organizing meetings of mental health stakeholders to disseminate information, discuss issues and develop consensus, or to plan new initiatives; develops reports of meeting conclusions and recommendations.         
  • Prepares, creates, and conducts presentations based on research activities for meetings and conferences.         
  • Assists in the production of Section 508-compliant documents/reports

Other Responsibilities:        

  • Travels to meet with research/development sites or to attend program events as needed, and performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:        

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, Sociology, Social Work, Statistics, or related field       
  • One year experience required (two or more years preferred) in writing analytical (research) reports or materials. Experience can be replaced by a master’s degree in an appropriate field.     
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research methods and descriptive statistics and appropriateness of procedures is essential as is knowledge of qualitative methodologies including case study and focus groups.         
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, mental health services and systems helpful.         
  • Knowledge of the crisis services system (e.g. call centers, mobile crisis response, CSUs, etc.) a plus.      
  • Comfortable communicating via email, video calls, chat, etc. to coordinate research activities.     
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and/or multiple projects simultaneously essential. ·        
  • Experience and skill utilizing relational databases and SQL a plus.         
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, such as Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel.


SUPERVISION:         

  • The Behavioral Health Research Associate reports directly to the Associate Director of Consulting and Development.


TRAVEL:  

  • Travel may be occasionally required to attend conferences, trainings, and other events.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This can be a fully telework/remote position that may include up to four days of in-person training upon hire in Falls Church, Virginia.         
  • For individuals local to the DMV area, this position requires two days per month on in-person work at the NRI offices in Falls Church, Virginia.
