Forward Justice is seeking a driven self-starter leader, excited about developing campaign strategies using a multidisciplinary framework to serve as our Campaign Director to join our growing team. The position is responsible for the design and implementation of Forward Justice’s campaigns strategy working within the organization’s three strategic approaches: (1.) Change laws, policies, and practices upholding racism and mass incarceration (2.) Shift narrative, culture, and values are connected to the paradigms of punishment, racial criminalization, and inequality (3.) Build a broad base of people and organizations committed to accelerating a revived, thriving, just Southern democracy and the end to mass incarceration. 

This position is ideal for strong writers and communicators with strategic insight and previous campaigning and/or strategic communications experience, expertise in racial, democracy, criminal, economic, and social justice issues and policies. This position will have two immediate reports. The right candidate will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and be able to handle competing priorities. This position reports directly to the Co-directors of the organization and will work closely with team members throughout the organization to achieve Forward Justice’s mission. 

Leadership & Managerial Responsibilities:  

  • Lead in conceptualizing and constructing short and long-term plans for campaign operations including work plans, budgets, and overall timelines to further the organization's mission.  
  • Manage and support communications, legal, and organizing department leads in achieving campaign goals and mission. 
  • Manage team to achieve program and campaign goals, as well as to develop their leadership through practice. 
  • Manage relationships with service providers, vendors, consultants, and other contractors as necessary to successfully execute campaign strategies.  

 Campaign Responsibilities: 

  • Consistently refine and define in practice the use of communications, legal, and organizing strategies to reach campaign goals  
  • Understand various legal strategies and how strategies can meet ultimate campaign and public education goals. 
  • Co-create communications strategies in consultation with the communications manager to achieve campaign goals. 
  • Build and maintain relationships with the coalition and local leaders, liaison with various organizational partners and campaigns. 
  • Build relationships with movement partners and be able to work well within an interdependent team structure to assist in rapid response and long-term campaigns.  
  • Work to develop, evaluate and analyze data to report out the impact of our campaigns 
  • Actively participate in department and campaign teams, and as a part of the overall Forward Justice leadership to share responsibility in developing an inclusive, learning-based culture that centers campaigns to make real change. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Collaborative leadership approach 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Ability to be flexible to adjust to changing environments and circumstances 
  • Understand the role of digital organizing  
  • Strong communications and writing skills in multiple formats (email, phone, text, social media) 
  • Demonstrated ability to build and motivate teams and work effectively in a collaborative team environment in both a managerial and support role 
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and municipal legislative processes 
  • Understand the role of narrative change in racial justice organizing  

Required qualifications: 

  • Strong public policy expertise and knowledge preferred  
  • Strong advocate for racial and social justice 
  • 8 – 10 years of upper-level management experience  
  • Superb writing, communications, and analytical skills.  
  • Strong interpersonal, active listening, and communication skills.  
  • A high level of independence, initiative, creativity, and good judgment.  
  • Commitment to Forward Justice’s mission, vision, and values.
