The Calyx Institute is hiring a Junior Membership Coordinator to play a key role in communicating with and facilitating support for our members, assisting with our administrative backend, and creating and maintaining record-keeping systems. The Junior Membership Coordinator will represent Calyx through professional, responsive communication with the members who support the Institute, pack and ship membership benefits to donors, and improve our administrative processes. As a small but growing nonprofit, Calyx is looking for someone who can work both independently and in close collaboration with our team.

The Calyx Institute is a not-for-profit education and research organization devoted to studying, testing, developing, and implementing privacy technology and tools to educate the public and promote free speech, free expression, civic engagement and privacy rights on the internet and in the mobile telephone industry. The mission of The Calyx Institute is to educate the public about privacy in digital communications and to develop and test building blocks that internet users can incorporate into their daily internet activities, and service providers can use to build “privacy by design” into their service offerings. Calyx develops and maintains a range of tools and technologies for secure communications to members, including private online messaging through Jabber/XMPP, wireless internet hotspots, Tor onion services, and more.

Calyx is funded primarily by our membership program. Through a partnership with the nonprofit Mobile Citizen, member donors can receive a wireless hotspot with unlimited access to Sprint's 4G network. We currently have several thousand members through this growing program.

If you are interested in entering the field of digital rights advocacy to help protect freedom of speech, access to information, privacy, and security online, we encourage you to apply.

This is a full-time, salaried, non-exempt position located at our Brooklyn, New York office. The salary will be $34,000 - $40,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prioritizing work-from-home to the maximum extent possible. However, some of this position's tasks will require in-office work. This position may require out-of-state travel several times a year to conferences, but only after the COVID-19 pandemic is over.
