Position Summary

Urban Alliance is seeking a Program Manager to split time between two programs: first, to co-manage and grow the Obama Youth Jobs Corps (OYJC) on Chicago’s South Side in partnership with a second Program Manager and Program Director, and second, manage and grow the Teacher Institute (TI). The Program Manager will be responsible for developing strong relationships with schools and youth, recruiting and retaining students and teachers in both programs and assisting with curriculum development and facilitating professional development workshops for sophomores and juniors. This position reports to the OYJC Program Director and is located in Chicago. The ideal candidate is an innovative and organized professional with demonstrated experience working with youth and has strong facilitation skills. Top candidates will have an ability to build and maintain relationships with school and community leaders and demonstrate an understanding of the challenges facing young people on Chicago’s South Side.

Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1996, Urban Alliance has since expanded to Baltimore, Chicago, and Northern Virginia. To date, Urban Alliance has placed over 4,000 students in paid internships and served more than 18,000 through job skills training.


50% of Program Manager Role: Co-Manage the Obama Youth Jobs Corps (OYJC)

Together with the Obama Foundation in 2018, Urban Alliance launched the Obama Youth Jobs Corps (OYJC) to bring year-long workforce readiness training and internships to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors on Chicago's South Side over five years. The Program Manager (PM) will work in partnership with the current OYJC PM to focus specifically on the sophomore and junior training components of the OYJC at multiple CPS schools located on Chicago’s South Side.


Key Responsibilities for OYJC

Program Management and Execution

  • Manage day-to-day operations/logistics of the program.
  • Work in collaboration with school staff to develop and execute participant recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Plan and facilitate high quality quarterly workshops focused on professional development and civic engagement for sophomores and daily workshops to cohort of juniors.
  • Establish a safe and professional learning environment for students that encourages active participation, a high degree of student engagement and content retention.
  • Facilitate conversations with school staff to identify needs around professional development for sophomores and juniors.
  • In coordination with UA’s Curriculum Manager, utilize best practices to develop life skills and workforce development workshops that prepare participants for post-secondary success.

Relationship Building

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with youth participants.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with counselors, principals, and teachers at partner schools.
  • Serve as a resource to school staff as needed.
  • Establish relationships with key community stakeholders to support program participants in their personal and professional development

Administrative Support and Reporting

  • Collect routine program data, attendance and assignment completion in Canvas and Salesforce platforms.
  • Work with internal Evaluation Team to implement program evaluations.
  • Provide data/reports to schools and partners as needed.


50% of Program Manager Role: Manage Teacher Institute (TI)

In a continued effort to strengthen the nexus between education and workforce in Chicago, Urban Alliance is working to expand workforce training opportunities for young people while building capacity at the school level. In its second year, the Teacher Training Institute will include provide training for 25, new and returning, Chicago area high school teachers in the Fall of 2021. The purpose of the institute will be to train teachers to facilitate UA’s workforce readiness curriculum and to prepare teachers to bring the trainings back to their schools for the corresponding school year.


Key Responsibilities for TI

Program Management and Execution

  • Build and manage day-to-day and seasonal operations/logistics of the program.
  • Build out a teacher recruitment and accountability/assessment strategy to work in collaboration with schools to recruit quality applicants.
  • Facilitate teacher trainings and conduct classroom observation sessions to monitor program quality.

Relationship Management

  • Maintain strong relationships with counselors, principals and teachers at partner schools.
  • Serve as point-of-contact for teachers to provide ongoing support.

Administrative Support and Reporting

  • Collect routine program data, teacher participation and workshop facilitation and enter into Salesforce on a regular basis.
  • Work with internal Evaluation Team to implement program evaluations.
  • Provide data/reports to schools, partners and donors as needed.


Required Qualifications for the Program Manager

  • Extensive facilitation and/or teaching experience
  • Ability to connect and engage with high school aged youth
  • Experience working with community organizations and schools in under-resourced areas
  • Experience building and managing a new program successfully
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to present oneself professionally and maintain effective, professional working relationships with youth, adults and co-workers
  • Flexibility and a capacity to quickly adapt to change
  • Ability to travel between assigned high schools
  • Minimum of 5 years working with and/or on behalf of at-risk youth
  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience enhancing a program that resulted in measurably stronger outcomes
  • Experience working with high profile community members and organizations
  • Demonstrated success in improving student outcomes
  • Experience working with community organizations and high schools on Chicago’s south-side
  • Experience training educators

$50,000 - $54,000

Compensation and Benefit Package:

The salary range for this position is $50,000 -$54,000. At Urban Alliance we offer 18 days of paid time off, 10 paid federal holidays, as well as a birthday and diversity paid holiday. Our benefits include a comprehensive health plan with 90% individual healthcare coverage, 403(B) retirement plans with a 3% match, whole life insurance and pre-tax commuter benefits. We offer working remotely up to two days per week.
