THE OPPORTUNITY:

Our Mission Statement: The Idaho Youth Ranch provides troubled children a bridge to a valued, responsible and productive future. We are a catalyst for positive change.

 

Since the day Reverend James Crowe and his wife Ruby started a boys’ ranch in rural Idaho in the 1950s, the Idaho Youth Ranch (IYR) has grown into a state-wide, multi-service agency serving at-risk boys, girls, and their families. Based in the thriving capital city of Boise, IYR is one of Idaho’s largest and best-known nonprofit organizations. The Youth Ranch cares for youth whose lives have been altered by traumatic events, which may include abuse, neglect, loss, substance abuse, violence, mental illness, and homelessness. Without treatment, these young people are likely to abuse drugs, go to jail, commit suicide, or experience early death. Few will ever have healthy relationships, and most are likely to pass their pain on to their children in a generational cycle. In treating the effects of trauma, IYR transforms angry, scared young people into resilient and capable adults.

 

The Idaho Youth Ranch’s approach to trauma-informed care employs a variety of therapies and techniques, to treat each child and family in the way that is best suited to their needs.  IYR is distinguished by offering a comprehensive continuum of care, from parenting classes, to outpatient therapy, to intensive residential therapeutic treatment. Many of IYR’s youth and families take part in IYR’s signature Equine Therapy programs; true to its roots as a working ranch in the 1950s, IYR believes in the power of hard work, being outdoors and working with animals to heal wounded spirits. And the Idaho Youth Ranch stays with these youth for as long as it takes, providing ongoing access to IYR services, peer support, college readiness, scholarships, and workforce readiness, to help end the cycle of abuse, poverty and unemployment.  Today, 96 percent of Idaho Youth Ranch graduates are in school and/or working.

 

Idaho is among the states with the highest prevalence of youth who have experienced multiple traumatic events, and the state is in a period of rapid growth. To meet the increasing need for its services, IYR has embarked on an exciting new chapter. In the last year, under interim CEO Jason Fry, IYR made substantial improvements to build sustainability, enhance its leadership team, further develop its Board of Directors and fundraising capacity, and focus on organizational culture. The Board of Directors recently adopted a bold strategic vision for IYR, with the following goals:

 

·        Develop a best-in-class system to treat trauma and build resilience in kids;

·        Lead a trauma care movement in Idaho;

·        Be the leading youth-serving organization in the region; and

·        Create a sustainable business model that supports these goals.

 

A key to realizing this vision is the development of IYR’s new Hands of Promise Campus. Located about an hour west of Boise near Middleton, the beautiful 258-acre ranch was acquired by IYR in 2015. The campus offers a tremendous opportunity to build best-in-class facilities and programs, create partnerships with other service providers, and develop income-generating social enterprises. A $7 million capital campaign funded the land purchase, site planning, infrastructure, and an outdoor riding arena for equine therapy, which will begin at the ranch in late 2018. The IYR leadership team is now completing the program design and financial model for the Hands of Promise residential program. This model will inform the next phase of construction, to include living spaces, group areas, and an indoor riding arena. IYR expects to launch a new capital campaign in late 2018, with several prospective major donors already identified.

 

The Idaho Youth Ranch has more than 400 employees around the state. In addition to the Hands of Promise campus, IYR operates Hays House in Boise, an emergency shelter for youth ages 9 – 18 who are runaways, homeless, struggling with family conflict, or victims of abuse or neglect. At its Anchor House facility in northern Idaho, IYR offers outpatient and equine therapy to a rapidly growing number of youth and families.  IYR is visible throughout the state thanks to its network of popular thrift shops, which help fund the organization’s programs and services and provide youth employment opportunities. The Idaho Youth Ranch invested $3.5 million in Idaho’s most vulnerable kids in FY17. More than half of the program budget is funded by private contributions.  More information on IYR can be found here.

 

At this exciting time of transformation and opportunity, the Idaho Youth Ranch seeks a highly experienced and mission-driven Chief Executive Officer. The CEO will provide inspired leadership internally and externally, strategic and managerial acumen, and superior communications and relationship-building abilities. This individual will be a leader and advocate in Idaho and nationally in preventing and healing the impacts of trauma, creating promising futures for kids and families.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

The Chief Executive Officer will be responsible for the overall success of Idaho Youth Ranch, providing internal and external leadership for all aspects of IYR. The CEO will formulate strategic priorities collaboratively with the Board of Directors, develop and execute business plans in alignment with IYR’s mission and strategy, and provide operational and financial oversight of IYR to ensure ongoing sustainability. The CEO will provide leadership and expertise in setting and achieving fundraising goals, and inspire staff, Board members, donors and stakeholders in a shared vision for the Idaho Youth Ranch.

 

The new CEO for Idaho Youth Ranch will possess the personal and professional attributes and competencies required for success in these key areas of responsibility:

Strategic Leadership

Partners with the Board of Directors and provides leadership to the executive team and staff to ensure organizational effectiveness and successful achievement of IYR’s mission, goals, and objectives. 

·        Provides enthusiastic, inspiring, and results-driven leadership that is visible and impactful throughout IYR and the community. Serves as IYR’s principal standard-bearer both internally and externally.

·        Demonstrates a collaborative and effective partnership with the Board. Communicates effectively with the Board and provides timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.

·        Oversees organizational transformation in alignment with IYR’s strategic plan and mission, and engages and partners with the Board in ongoing strategic visioning to ensure IYR successfully fulfills its mission into the future.

·        Executes strategic plans and develops and oversees operational plans to achieve operational objectives and sustainable business operations.

·        Ensures that organizational leadership and culture are conducive to an effective workplace aligned to IYR values and mission, with a focus on employee development and engagement.

·        Demonstrates effective leadership and people management skills with executive team and ensures that effective management processes translate throughout the organization.

 

Fundraising & Community Relations

Serves as a primary ambassador and the “face” of IYR to actively and positively shape public perception and support of IYR.

·        Actively seeks out and effectively leverages opportunities to advance IYR in terms of public reputation, financial support, and business opportunities.

·        Serves as key participant in IYR’s fundraising and development strategies to include recurring major donor initiatives as well as IYR’s capital campaign. 

·        Develops and maintains effective external relationships essential to advancing the success of IYR, to include a wide spectrum of businesses, service organizations, influential individuals/donors, stakeholders, and strategic partners.

·        Serves as primary spokesperson of IYR for public relations, strategic communications, stakeholder relations, and fundraising. Provides engaging, dynamic, and trustworthy public presence for IYR.

·        Enhances IYR’s image by being active and visible in the community and working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations. 

·        Oversees external communications strategy to enhance public awareness and understanding of IYR and its mission.

 

Financial and Operational Management

Provides oversight to ensure effective execution and accountability of IYR operations. Develops, deploys and oversees resources in a manner that ensures the financial health of IYR.

  • Demonstrates strong business acumen and sound financial understanding and oversees appropriate fiscal controls and meaningful financial metrics. 

·        Responsible for the fiscal integrity of IYR, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and quarterly financial statements which accurately reflect IYR’s financial condition.

·        Responsible for fiscal management that operates within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and results in a positive financial position for IYR.

·        Evaluates existing revenue streams for increased effectiveness and/or new revenue stream opportunities through partnerships, strategic alliances, or other resources necessary to support IYR’s mission.

·        Provides oversight to the COO in the leadership and management of IYR business operations that include IYR programming, social enterprise revenue streams, and other functions/departments of IYR. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The incoming CEO will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following desired characteristics, experience and skills:

·        Genuine passion for the Idaho Youth Ranch mission

·        10+ years of senior management experience; nonprofit management experience preferred

·        Proven record of transparent, collaborative, inspirational, and high-integrity leadership

·        Proven ability to create and implement a strategic vision in alignment with organizational mission

·        Ability to develop and execute business plans and provide oversight in alignment with strategic and organizational goals/objectives

·        Exceptional financial and business acumen as well as a strong entrepreneurial spirit to effectively lead a large, complex nonprofit organization

·        Demonstrated ability to be results-driven and an impactful agent of organizational change

·        Proven ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with a Board of Directors

·        Superior leadership and interpersonal skills that foster a team environment

·        Demonstrated success in a significant and recurring fundraising role as well as knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector

·        Strong relational, collaborative, consensus-building, and networking skills to engage and partner with Board members, donors, external stakeholders, and volunteers

·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills, exceptional public speaking ability, and demonstrated ability to positively represent IYR to the community

·        Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development, and accountability

·        Excellent time management, problem solving, judgement, negotiation, and decision-making abilities

·        Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in business or related field preferred

·        Must be able to relocate to Boise, Idaho
