Manager, Explorer Training Content Development

How You’ll Contribute

The Explorer Engagement group develops, elevates and empowers our network of National Geographic Explorers. These empowerment activities are led by a series of teams within Explorer Engagement, including Explorer Programs, International, and the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab.

The National Geographic Society is seeking a Manager, Explorer Training Content Development to join and support the Explorer Program’s Capacity Development team. This manager will assist with the design, production, facilitation, and management of educational content for the blended Explorer Capacity Development program, which focuses on empowering our global network of Explorers (grantees, Fellows, awardees, and other affiliated individuals) through a suite of trainings and learning experiences online and in-person.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Content Development (50%)

• Works closely with the Senior Manager, Instructional Design & Digital Learning to support the development of Explorer online learning.
• Conducts research to support content development.
• Creates engaging state-of-the-art smaller learning experiences through words, images, and video for a global audience.
• Develops and manages course communications in the Learning Management System as well as other platforms. 
• Creates supporting materials such as rubrics, manuals, training guides, assets and more. 
• Assist with investigating technical bugs and troubleshooting in online courses.
• Works closely with the Manager, Explorer Training and Capacity Development to support the in-person trainings.
• Creates standardized training materials and slide decks.
• Works with Subject Matter Experts and training facilitators to create customized content and tailored facilitation plans.
• Provides support for virtual, in-person and online training events. 
• Supports the integration of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion principles in all our trainings to enhance accessibility, foster inclusivity and reflect the expansive diversity of the Explorer community. 

Talent & Asset Management (30%)

• Supports the building of a talent pipeline, including media assets, and increased integration of Explorers into NGS, NGP and Disney platforms.
• Collaborates with Explorer Management, International, Storytelling & Communications teams
• Integrates Explorers into the talent pipeline of individuals considered for various engagements with NGS, NGP and Disney platforms as well as external opportunities.  
• Recommends Explorers for more elevated, bespoke media training opportunities and tags them to relevant talent campaigns in Salesforce.

Data Analysis & Reports (20%)

• Monitors and keeps track of course success to inform strategy and decision making.
• Collaborates with the Monitoring and Evaluation Team on data collection and reporting.

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. learning and teaching, adult trainings, content development in educational settings)

Minimum Years and Type of Experience   

5+ years of experience teaching and/or creating and facilitating trainings in a global context 

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

• Experience in the (global) field of education and adult learning
• Experience with a Learning Management System (LMS) and video conferencing
• Experience working with subject matter experts and translating expertise into broadly engaging and effective training content
• Highly effective written and oral communications skills essential. Ability to work flexibly at all times as part of an internal team and with all levels of staff
• Creative thinking, responsive problem-solving, and attention to detail a must

Desired Qualifications

• Experience with graphic design and/or video editing software
• Familiarity with Salesforce
• Cross disciplinary knowledge of science, communication, storytelling and media
• Additional language skills - preference in Spanish or French
