Description

Media Matters for America — a progressive, Washington, D.C.-based, nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks an Advocacy and Organizing Manager to help us advance our mission with impactful campaigns.


Role Summary:

The Advocacy and Organizing Manager is the primary driver of advocacy initiatives at Media Matters. She/he is responsible for evaluating Media Matters’ research and the broader media landscape and identifying new opportunities for meaningful action in support of our mission. This will include day-to-day execution of Media Matters’ original campaigns and supporting new and existing advocacy efforts leveraged by progressive movement partners.  

 

The Advocacy and Organizing Manager is a member of the External Affairs team.

 

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports To: The Advocacy and Organizing Manager reports to the External Affairs Director.


Responsibilities:

  • Executing Campaigns and Actions: The Advocacy and Organizing Manager creates and sustains original high-impact Media Matters advocacy campaigns while also inspiring and supporting relevant partner campaigns based on Media Matters’ work and assessment of the landscape. She/he oversees actions from start to finish, from testing narratives and ideas to developing strategy to evaluating impact, and aligns the efforts of all Media Matters departments and builds external partnerships in support of advocacy goals.


  • Training and Equipping To Advance Advocacy: The Advocacy and Organizing Manager will promote a larger culture of media advocacy and organizing among highly-engaged members of Media Matters’ communities and the progressive movement. This includes serving as point of contact, conducting trainings and briefings that equip activists to advance campaigns, and supporting independent individual and organizational efforts aligned with Media Matters’ mission.


  • Developing Campaign Content:  The Advocacy and Organizing Manager is responsible for creating compelling content that mobilizes Media Matters’ supporters and partners to participate in Media Matters campaigns. In coordination with relevant departments, she/he will write advocacy-focused content for the website, email blasts, social media platforms, and other channels; coordinate the creation of campaign assets, including graphics, videos, ads, swag, supplies for in-person activations, and other collateral; and oversee the promotion of Media Matters’ actions on our website.  


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience with progressive grassroots or grasstops advocacy
  • Strong and holistic understanding of the progressive movement, key stakeholders and the top fights they’re engaged in
  • Strong, fast writer with an ability to quickly synthesize information about new topics
  • Understanding of the 24-hour news cycle, the online information ecosystem, and how conservative misinformation affects our public debate
  • Understanding of and appreciation for a wide range of campaign strategies and tools that drive successful advocacy in this new media landscape
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Self-starter who can execute duties in a timely manner and quickly adapt to new challenges in a rapid-response media environment
