Description

Founded in 1989, Esperanza Community Housing Corporation (Esperanza) is a social justice non-profit in South Central Los Angeles that achieves long-term, comprehensive community development. We recognize that Indigenous, Black and Latino immigrant communities are disproportionately impacted by historical oppression, health disparities, disinvestment and displacement. Therefore, we develop and preserve affordable housing; elevate health equity and access to care; mobilize for environmental justice; create and protect local economic opportunities; expand engagement in arts and culture; and advocate for policies protecting human rights. Esperanza works collaboratively to strengthen South Los Angeles. In all of our actions, Esperanza builds hope with the community.

Position Overview

Position: Policy Associate

Reports to: Director of Policy

Proposed Hours: 30 Hours per week with occasional evening and weekend hours required

Salary: Based on qualifications + comprehensive benefits package

Esperanza is seeking a part-time Policy Associate to support our systems change work through multiple advocacy campaigns and coalitions.  Under the supervision of the Director of Policy, the Policy Associate will provide policy analysis and strategic advocacy support to impact grassroots policy affecting thousands of Angelinos and reforms at a local and state level.

Los Angeles’s low-Income communities and communities of color – specifically Black, indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities – live on the frontlines of multiple, intersecting social justice issues.  These include racial justice, immigrant rights, environmental justice, equitable development, and health equity.  The disparities laid bare by such systemic racism contribute to the displacement, increasing health disparities, and disenfranchisement of communities of South Central LA.  Therefore, Esperanza is seeking an emerging leader who can support our systems change work in pursuing a just recovery framework that centers and is led by the voices of those on the frontlines.

The Policy Associate is passionate about urban communities, infinitely curious, self-directed, and interested in producing excellent work to make a difference. They recognize the urgency of our work and are interested in disrupting the “status quo” approaches to revitalizing neighborhoods.
