Position: Head Rowing Coach

Location: Chicago, IL

About ROW: Recovery on Water (ROW) is a non-profit based in Chicago that serves as a rowing team that gives survivors of breast cancer the unique opportunity to become active in their recovery, gain support from and interact with fellow survivors.

The Role: Reporting to and working closely with the Programs Manager and serving as an integral member of the ROW staff, the Head Rowing Coach will be responsible for the coaching and logistics of all rowing practices, communication with and management of program athletes and volunteers, as well as working closely with the Programs Manager on program development, delivery, quality control, and evaluation. The Head Rowing Coach will also work with the Program Manager, instructors, and volunteers to ensure that programs are safe and successful. Because of the nature of our mission, this position is first and foremost about being able to communicate and empathize with adult patients and survivors of breast cancer, as well as giving them a good rowing experience.

General responsibilities:

·      Maintain ROW fleet of boats and associated rowing equipment

·      Ensure the proper implementation of ROW programming and curriculum as it specifically relates to rowing

·      Direct, delegate, and support all contract rowing coaches

·      Solicit and manage athlete & volunteer feedback and communication

Specific responsibilities:

·      Maintain weekly contact with contract coaches to keep them informed about scheduling and necessary team events

·      Create and maintain an accurate weekly schedule of contract coaches for purposes of payroll

·      Create training calendars/ plans for athletes, specific to events throughout the year

·      Attend and lead all scheduled outdoor practices as well as most indoor practices during the offseason

·      Analyze and provide real-time feedback for individual technique as well as that for entire crews as a whole

  • Work with the Programs Committee and coaches to solicit feedback from team members regarding satisfaction with coaches and programs to assess the strengths of the program and identify areas for improvement
  • Organize contract coaches, athletes, and equipment for regattas

·      Maintain a positive relationship with ROW membership, available to meet one on one to discuss goals and concerns

·      Engage in professional development and related training when necessary

·      Work with the Coxswain Task Force to recruit, train, and retain volunteer coxswains

·      Recruit volunteers and manage volunteer roster for practices and events


  • Minimum two (2) years of rowing as part of a competitive rowing program
  • Minimum two (2) years of row coaching experience, recreational or competitive
  • Must have or be willing to obtain USRowing Level 2 Coach’s certification within the first year of employment
  • Must have or be willing to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within the first year of employment
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented
  • Ability to communicate at a high level and build relationships with adults of varying ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker
  • Passion for Recovery on Water’s mission
  • Ability to learn or familiarize themselves with the symptoms, treatments, and side effects of all types of breast cancer
  • Experience working or volunteering with programs (rowing or otherwise) for adults of varying abilities and skill levels
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Salary Range & Benefits

Salary is contingent upon available funding, and is commensurate with experience and qualifications. ROW also offers a benefit package with health insurance.

Job Location and Work Conditions

The position is based in the Bridgeport, Chicago area and requires the employee to work predominantly at the site of most ROW rowing programs, the Eleanor Boathouse. Some office work may be required occasionally at the ROW offices, also located in Bridgeport, Chicago. The mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces. The hours required for this position during the outdoor season are Sunday mornings, Monday through Thursday afternoons and evenings and all regatta weekends. During the indoor season the hours shift to include all indoor ROW practices as well as more office time spent program planning and soliciting one on one athlete feedback.
