The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Director, for the Animal Research Issues department. The main responsibility of this position is to conduct the planning, execution, and tracking associated with the management of animal research campaigns that generally are of greater complexity, scope, impact or higher priority to the organization to ensure the delivery of specific objectives/outcomes in support of the organization’s strategic objectives and priorities.
This position will be responsible for:
- Acting as a team lead, advisor and mentor to program managers;
- Providing leadership on animal research campaigns that involve multi-cross cutting issues, require considerable resources, and need high levels of functional integration across the organization;
- Working with subordinates and helping the campaigns to develop a plan to ensure achievement of objectives/outcomes and include the identified actions to be taken, a schedule/timeline for the short-and long term actions and outcomes, budget needed, and the specific measures/metrics for evaluation throughout the campaign;
- Assessing and evaluating the outcomes of the campaign progress, identifying problems and making adjustments as necessary to ensure successful, quality outcomes;
- Supporting the identification and documentation of successful processes, as well as areas where improvements can be made for the execution of future campaigns;
- Developing and fostering relationships with individuals, institutions, organizations, and the media in order to positively influence and gain needed action and support for HSUS campaigns;
- Working closely with scientists to establish best strategy and policy;
- Pressuring regulatory agencies and lawmakers to adopt laws, policies or otherwise make changes that replace the use of animals, or reduce the number of animals used;
- Drafting and submitting comments to regulatory agencies; writing letters to/meet with agencies to communicate problems; drafting legislation and/or testimony, attending meetings that provide updates on agency activities when possible, and work with Regulatory Affairs and Federal Affairs to coordinate these efforts;
- Communicating and coordinating efforts with Animal Research Issues department as well other departments at The HSUS and utilize the resources/connections they offer;
- Influencing universities, scientists, corporations, and others using animals for research purposes to adopt better practices that will replace the use of animals or reduce the number of animals used;
- Driving public involvement to influence decision makers to replace the use of animals or reduce the number of animals used;
- Educating the public through web pages, action alerts, social media, media interviews, letters to the editor, press releases, work with major donors where possible; and other means;
- Working closely with supervisor and participating in establishing department’s goals and strategies;
- Managing and overseeing program and program managers, program associates and program assistants.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, life science, or related field or equivalent experience required;
- Minimum 8 years related experience and a minimum of 5 years of management experience;
- General knowledge regarding the use of animals in biomedical research and testing as well as non-animal alternatives, including identification of experts, main stakeholders, existing federal laws and regulations regarding the use of animals in research, and how to influence government and corporate policies;
- Demonstrated ability to create and implement a multifaceted advocacy campaign plan;
- Ability to comprehend scientific literature;
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook;
- Must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills, adaptability, ability to take initiative and influence others, and good organization and planning skills;
- Ability to be a strategic thinker, good collaborator and partner;
- Commitment to animal protection, including a basic knowledge and comprehension of current issues preferred;
- Ability and willingness to travel.
