Background

The National Press Foundation is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to “make good journalists better.” Since 1976, the foundation has provided professional development opportunities to thousands of editors, producers and reporters, without cost to them or their news organizations. Through fellowships and open webinars, NPF trainings provide journalists with access to key policymakers and subject-matter experts to help them better understand and explain the effects of public policy on readers and viewers; training on the latest tools and techniques; and opportunities to network with fellow journalists.


Deputy Director of Training and Outreach

NPF seeks a journalist or former journalist with at least five years’ experience in print, digital or multimedia production to join a five-person staff dedicated to offering excellent, timely professional training for journalists. Post-journalism experience in teaching, developing or managing programs, social media and marketing is desirable.


Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits.


Job Duties:

·     Identify speakers and prepare curriculum for journalist training, consulting with the Director of Training and Content.

·     Conduct trainings online, and in future, in person. Help produce multi-day programs in Washington D.C. and other domestic and international locations.

·     Write and edit materials for website, newsletter, and funders. These include promotions for upcoming training; takeaways and other material to be posted on website; biweekly newsletter; and reports, newsfeed announcements, grant proposals, and other items.

·     Publish content on WordPress.

·     Create social media postings to advance NPF activities and goals.

·     Conduct outreach and recruiting for NPF fellowships, online programs and awards, particularly to local and underserved news organizations, journalists from diverse backgrounds, online and nontraditional news providers, news startups and ethnic media, consulting with Director of Operations.

·     Manage and expand relationships with newsrooms and other journalism organizations.

·     Generate ideas for new trainings based on evolving news organization needs.


Skills:

·     News judgment. Ability to conceptualize ideas for news-relevant programs and identify top speakers who will be best able to communicate with journalists.

·     Experience creating high-quality content across multiple distribution channels.

·     Ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including other senior -level journalist and editors, policymakers, subject-matter experts, as well as fellows and interns.

·     Active profile on social media, strong network of journalism industry contacts preferred.

·     Solid organization and time management skills.

·     Knowledge of AP Style and attention to stylistic detail.

·     Required: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; WordPress a plus.

·     Video editing or graphic design skills a plus. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Premier Pro and Content Management Systems desirable.


This is a full-time position offering a competitive salary commensurate with experience. NPF provides a generous benefits package, including fully paid health benefits and a 7% retirement contribution.
