Faith in New York (FINY) is seeking a highly talented and motivated Director of Organizing with a passion for racial and economic justice, developing and executing powerful campaigns, and a desire to coach and train talented organizers and leaders towards a vision for deep and lasting transformation in New York City.


ABOUT FAITH IN NEW YORK

Faith in New York (FINY) is a growing multifaith, multicultural, multilingual federation of over 70 congregations representing 80,000 families in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. Faith in New York's mission is to develop grassroots leaders, build congregational justice teams, and equip congregations to move significant public policy change. Our leaders have a vision of an equitable New York with violence-free neighborhoods, access to good jobs, affordable housing for all, an end to mass incarceration, clean air and water, and a place where people of all backgrounds can fully participate in economic and civic life. Faith in New York works closely with allied organizations in both secular and religious organizations to build and strengthen the movement for racial and economic justice in New York and across the country.

DIRECTOR OF ORGANIZING POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Organizing will oversee Faith in New York’s organizing and program areas, helping to develop campaigns and programs that advance the mission and priorities of FINY. This includes crafting organizing campaigns that  increase organizational impact, expand our member base, and develop powerful leaders. The position reports directly to the Executive Director (ED), and is a member of the senior leadership team.  The ideal candidate will be a skilled organizer and effective manager, with experience in strategic analysis, managing multiple programs, and movement building from a racial justice and faith lens.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Campaign Development and Management

  • Design and implement effective campaigns that include strategic analysis, coalition and alliance building, public narrative shifting, political analysis, and organizational power-building.
  • Work with Executive Director, Executive Team, and Core Leadership Team to develop and assess multi-year programs, focused on racial and economic justice. 
  • Support organizing staff in the development and monitoring of work plans, campaign plans, and events/actions, including regular assessment and adjustment as necessary.
  • Support citywide base building strategy and tactics through base building drives, support and accountability, and developing and maintaining shared tools and systems.
  • Work with organizing staff to strengthen training programs that support the ability to develop relationships, analyze justice issues, effectively take action, and understand systemic injustices in a local, national and international context. 
  • Create systems and programs that increase member and partner recruitment, engagement, and retention.

Staff Development and Supervision

  • Manage and train organizing staff, interns and volunteers, ensuring regular supervision, evaluation and coaching on best practices for transformative organizing.
  • Develop quarterly and yearly professional development plans, campaign plans, work plans, and tools that focus on accountability and growth.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of data, campaign narratives, staff reporting, etc.
  • Oversee management of program budgets by organizing staff to ensure effective use of organizational resources.

Organizational Leadership 

  • Serve as an active member of the organizational Leadership Team to support and provide leadership for overall organizational development needs 
  • Participate in fundraising campaigns, including proposal development support, grant reporting information, membership dues solicitation, and individual donor cultivation
  • Provide support and participation for organization-wide campaign and events
  • Build intentional relationships with clergy, community members, partners and elected officials to build organizational membership and strengthen political power. 
  • Develop and sharpen strategic plans and institutional structures to grow the power and effectiveness of organizers, the organization, and our members in creating social and policy change.
  • Carries out​ other duties as needed to meet the mission of the organization.


SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Seasoned community organizer with at least 5 years of management, program design and implementation experience with a strong track record of successfully managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to grassroots movement building, with emphasis on policy analysis, faith-based organizing, racial and economic injustice.
  • Skilled facilitator and trainer with the ability to lead diverse groups through complex issues and conflict resolution.
  • Strong understanding of NYC political and advocacy landscape.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in office and database software, as well as web-based communication/collaboration tools such as VAN, Asana, Google Drive, Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
  • Valid NYS Drivers License and access to reliable transportation.


COMPENSATION

  • This position is full-time (40-50 hours per week), non-exempt position that reports to the Executive Director.
  • This position includes regular evening and occasional weekend work as needed.
  • Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
