Division - Department: 14th Street Y – Summer Programs

Job Classification: Non-Union – PT – FT (Full Time during camp program, June-August)

Supervisor: Division Manager

 

JOB PURPOSE

 

Division Heads will be responsible for the overall well-being of approximately 100+ campers at a time within a given age group at New Country Day Camp, which serves a population of campers entering K-8. They will also be responsible for ongoing communication with the families of the given age group, and the supervision of the counselors within the age division.

 

SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

 

  • Direct client group: Campers (Age assignment TBD)
  • Directly supervises counselors
  • Directly supervised by Division Manager
  • Serves as direct contact for families of participants in matters directly related to their camper

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Camper Care

  • Be responsible for the overall well-being of approximately 100+ campers and 20+ counselors at a time, including but not limited to physical and emotional needs
  • Maintain organized systems and records of camper and staff attendance, injuries, accidents, and other important information
  • Learn, understand, and promote camp’s mission and values which include Jewish sensibilities such as Tikkun Olam (repairing the world through sustainable practices), our Open Tent philosophy of inclusion, and more
  • Consult with Director of Jewish Life and Culture and Division Manager to plan and execute special weekly division-wide programming
  • Be present at pool complex for swim periods and support Swim Coordinator in an ease of flow from locker rooms into swim sections
  • Work with Operations Manager on ordering of supplies for division and program units, as well as maintaining an organized inventory and balanced budget
  • Be responsible for overall cleanliness and organization of division shelter and surrounding area



Logistics and Communications

  • Attend pre-camp meetings with families and/or staff as needed
  • Be available for conversations with parents in the spring and camp season
  • Write first day of session and help with weekly emails to division families
  • Write weekly emails to staff detailing important information for the week ahead, and boosting morale
  • Communicate as needed with Unit Heads and Support Supervisors regarding camper needs and concerns
  • Actively participate in NCDC’s sustainability and waste management efforts

 

Leadership and Staff Supervision

  • As a member of the NCDC Supervisory Staff, exhibit a role of leadership at all times
  • Be present at all days of orientation, camp and staff meetings during the camp season
  • Proactively problem solve and motivate colleagues as difficult moments present themselves throughout the camp season; encourage flexibility and understanding as means to achieve common goals
  • Establish and promote a commitment to the mission and vision of New Country Day Camp
  • Execute and follow the NCDC supervision model with counselor supervisees, including check-ins, on the ground trainings, and formal evaluations, which should be handed in to the full-time camp staff after the summer in a timely manner 


JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Knowledge


  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, liberal arts or equivalent professional experience required
  • 3+ years of camp experience, supervisory experience preferred
  • Competent in Microsoft Suite
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to interact with children and colleagues of diverse cultural and social backgrounds
  • Skilled and passionate about education and communication
  • Fast learner with ability to work independently and collaboratively
